Hello,

I have two S2 chrome bodies. The first one, SN 6141xxx, has the matching number stamped in the back and the film rewind is marked <EP>. The second one is SN 6178xxx, but it does not have a serial number stamped in the back. It is not an <EP> camera and the ASA dial goes to 400.

I'm curious as to when Nikon stopped stamping S2 serial numbers on backs, if ever?

Is there any correlation between <EP> cameras and stamped backs?

Do you think the back of my second S2 is original, or is it a replacement?

Thanks

s2 backs

the backs were numbered up to 6149999, i have not seen any 615xxxx S2's with backs numbered. there was no correlation to e.p items. the 614xxxx bodies asa goes to 200, my 616xxxx body (not numbered back ) goes also to 200asa

ps. does the 614 camera have a 1.4 lens? if so what is the serial number?

Jim,

Thanks for the info. I find it amazing that backs were numbered to begin with.

The 614xxxx body came with a chrome 5cm/1.4 S.C. NKJ No. 340xxx. The 617xxxx body has a black 5cm/1.4 S NKJ No. 414xxx. Why do you ask?

Thanks

I have a 617xxxx S2. Somewhere in Rotoloni's book there is a description of the change Nikon made to the S2 back. Mine is loaded right now or I would crack it to tell you how I know the back on mine (without serial number) does not match the 617xxxx body.

Nikon increased the length of the S2 pressure plate to ready the camera for a motor drive. From memory, the change was made around the time of the switch from chrome dials to black dials (from 618xxxx).
