I just bought a chrome SA 21/3.4 from a fellow RFF member, and it arrived today with some of the diaphragm blades detached and rattling around loose inside. (!)

Very disappointing -- I was really looking forward to using this lens, after seeing some work others have done with it.

Has anyone had an issue like that before? Any experiences getting that sort of thing repaired?

I assume the seller will take it back, but I figure I ought to explore the options....

I must admit that this a problem I have never encountered with a S.A.It should not be a big job -IF all the blades are straight. Probably some oil on the blades have increased resistance to the point were they popped out of the pivots holes.
I would ask the seller to pay for the service and then, once back, go ahead and enjoy one of the all time great lenses.

Sherry Krauter said she could probably fix it, but her advice was to return the lens to the seller and not buy extra headaches for myself, as life provides enough of those anyway. (I found Sherry to be a pleasure to chat with, BTW.)
Don Goldberg, OTOH, was confident he could fix it and all would be well.
I really want to keep the lens, so if the seller agrees to cover the cost, I'll let DAG take a shot at it.

Sorry to hear about your SA problem

I'm pleased to have mine back ...she is a Gem

Best of Luck Ari in Sorting it Out

Sorry to hear that ! That is a problem but my guess is that Don can repair it for you.

I bought my SA with a sticky aperture ring, setting to f/3.4 or f/4.0 needs lots of force because the aperture ring is tilted (lens seems to have bumped into something). Since setting the other apertures is easy I have never bothered about this.

It is a great little lens, though ! Post some photos when you got it back !🙂

Does the diaphragm still open and close?

Does the diaphragm still open and close?

I have a SA that I recently bought and when you shake the lens up and down I can hear a bit of slack on the aperture blades but the lens still works fine aperture is clean and moves crisply through all stops. Sherry told me this isn't a problem that i should worry about too much.
I am not sure if this is what the problem with your SA is but it reminded me of when I got mine because this caught me of guard as well. by the way my SA is the black 3.4 version
