Thx for the info. The seller does not have the F-803 equivalent in black anymore.

Any idea who else may have these?

I bought a tan Safrotto bag, but in a smaller size, from a seller on Ebay. I originally bought it for a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, thinking it would be much more difficult to steal the contents inside of it than the average bag. But now I use it all the time, even though I'm not as concerned now about security issues.

I have a Mekko F1X. I believe its the same brand as Safrotto. Marvellous bag, excellent quality.

I have the same bag, as well as the 803 equivalent. Nice canvas, well sewn, metal hardware all around- not to mention that both bags were only ~$100 combined. They are now my daily use bags (the big one for digital, the other for RF) and my chinese AA clone has been relegated to carrying my ETRS 😀

I understand that Mekko and Safrotto are manufactured in the same plant. I'm pretty sure that the insert in my 803 knock-off saved an M7 from damage in an accident. Those inserts are way beyond what Domke makes, and you don't have to pay for them either.

The Mekko F1x was one the best buys I've ever done. I found one in new condition in the classifieds for $30. Even at $79.95 it's a bargain. The F2 version looks just a tad smaller and its $65. This one even says its the F1 version for $65, might be the F2 however since they look very similar. http://cgi.ebay.com/SAFROTTO-CANVAS...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4a9c219392

The canvas and hardware are indeed great quality and the inserts are superb and can be custom fitted in just about any way. The padded carrying strap is excellent. Everything is included which is great. Most important to me were the 2 way zippers which protect your gear from dust, moisture and condensation. The only slight drawback I can tell is that the bag may be somewhat heavy, at least for some people.

The irritating thing is that Tiffen have essentially ruined Domke but have a notice on their web site that the bags are labeled Domke (they are labeled Mekko/Safrotto), and also labeled "Made in the USA" (my two are not) and are "produced with inferior materials and workmanship" (exactly the opposite actually).

It's really a shame as I have a 23yr old F-2 that just got a new strap as the rubber stitching in the old strap wore out. I love that old bag and it's still my main travel bag, I wish they made them like that now!

I've heard others say this, and am curious why. I have several domke bags. The newest was bought 3 yrs ago and it is built nicely with good materials. I carry it every day and it still looks nearly new

Well Chris the old Domkes are better than the new ones. The problem is that these knock-offs are not just better than the new Domkes, they're better than the older ones as well. Thicker canvas, better stitching, a wider strap with a free strap cushion, an unbelievably high quality insert that's also free, and quality metal hardware that has better detail design than the Domke plastic hardware. In addition, the F-803 and F-802 satchel clones don't have that annoying plastic bone under the handle that stops the bag from lying snugly against your hip. They've improved the designs in little ways that show they've thought about trying to make a better bag, and it shows.
