It's this crazy inland sea in California that was formed when a dam broke. It then became a resort destination, had it's salinity and toxicity increase due to agricultural runoff and basically died off as a destination spot though still supports a small population of people:

Really interesting place. There have been a couple of films about it and it figures in the new "Into the Wild" movie.
