My wife and I are leaving early tomorrow morning for San Francisco, where we'll be staying at the lovely Palace Hotel in the city. I'm attending a user conference, she's free to wander the city and eat seafood all week long - lucky girl!

I don't know how much time I'll have to go out and take photos, but I'm bringing my CV Bessa R and a couple of lenses. I'm learning to travel lighter these days - no more 4 camera bodies and eleventy-seven lenses and five flashes.

Any ideas on what's within walking distance of the Palace that would be fun or interesting to photograph - I mean, besides the obvious - cable cars and etc.

I may be offline for awhile - we'll be leaving Raleigh, NC early in the morning tomorrow.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

never been to the city by the sea but just wanted to say have a great time, even if it is work related. it's nice that your missus is able to go along with you. it's so nice to be in a new city and have time to wander about.

Chinatown. (Unless that's also too obvious).

it's a hard one because there is so much to see and photograph. chinatown is excellent i agree, north beach (the italian neighborhood) is adjoining and also interesting. i think the palace is in the mission district so sfmoma is a must see even though it's not something to photograph.

if it were me i would jump on a bus to cissy field underneath the golden gate bridge around sunset time....

Having lived here for a few years now - and taken a lot of photos - here is my top list;

1) Chinatown. Some great stuff there. Don't miss Russ alley which is the oldest alley in chinatown (also haunted).

2) Lombard street (the world's crookedest (is that a word?) street in the world.

3) Golden Gate Bridge (three 'angles' - down from Fort Pointe (you are at sea-level photographing up), on the vista to the right when you cross over the bridge and finally the vista to the left when you cross over the bridge (north) where you are above the bridge (that's where all the photos are taken when it's really foggy and you just see the top of the bridge).

4) Spend an hour and drive north and see:
- John Muir Woods (redwood trees)
- Stinson Beach (old hippy beach-town),
- Napa/Sonoma county (you will think you are in Italy with all the rolling hills and wineyards there...free tasting in most places as well ;) ).

5) Japantown (it's small but fun to visit - especially the mall there).
Takara has the best sushi there - you fill up for 15 dollars!

6) For traditional downtown shots go to Union Square downtown.

7) Right now there's a Egglestone exhibit at SoMa Museum (I havent been myself).

8) For high-tech freaks go to Sony Metreon on 4th and Mission - and after you're done shopping step outside to Yerba Buena Garden and sit in the grass and enjoy a coffee. Most weekends there are some free band or something playing there.

9) Fort Funston. It's about 15-20 minutes outside of San Francisco close to Daly City. Hanggliders, old fortifications, ocean views, dogs off leash, beach access, etc.

10) Ocean Avenue. Park and stroll along the beach.

11) Korea/Irish 'town'. Along Clement street up in the Richmond district. Very eclectic area. I'd say between around 8th avenue or so. A lot of good fabric stores as well - atleast one that is 'semi-famous'.

12) If you feel brave: 6th street between Mission and Market street - and anywhere in the Tenderloin district. Real dodgy area - I'd say avoid more than anything...

13) Street cars. You gotta ride one ofcourse. Easiest way is to take it from the turn-around down on Market (there are two - just follow the lines...).

14) Fisherman's wharf - with pier eh...39...41..42? The one that the sea lions have taken over.

15) Alcatraz. Actually really interesting to go over and see it.

16) Treasure Island. This is the island between Oakland and San Francisco (the mid point of the bay bridge). Take off on the exit and go down to the old military installation and you have an amazing view of San Francisco.

All I can think of right now...

Thanks I appreciate it! We won't be renting a car, so no go on the ones we can't get to via public transportation, and my own free time will be very limited - in meetings most of every day and even into the evenings - but my wife will be free to travel around and she's bringing her digital camera. I'd be happy just finding some decent places within six blocks or so of Union Square for late-night available light type photos presuming I even have some evenings free.

Girls are always at a walking distance and certainly fun and interestiing to photograph ;)

Did you miss the part where I said I'd be bringing MY WIFE with me? LOL. I'm sure my wife would understand, but really, no need to invite trouble.

the real chinatown

the real chinatown

hi there... if you do go to visit chinatown, then continue on into north beach and see if you can find what's left of the beatniks stomping grounds.
and when in chinatown, you'll find the main street is grant avenue, which has a bunch of tourist shops on it. if you walk one block up the hill, you'll find yourself on stockton street, which is the real main shopping street for the chinese community.

i knew richard would have the 411 on what to do there. i second treasure island, what a spectacularly cool view of the city. i'll be there for one of the upcoming holidays, and this thread is whetting my appetite. enjoy your trip.

Thanks, all! Gotta go to bed now, early rise for the 7 am flight. All day to get there, though. Yucko.

Great advice, and I appreciate it all!
