San Francisco

Try Adolph Gasser for the Fuji slide film - 181 2nd St, parking directly across from the store. Phone #495-3852. Also recommended, Photographers Supply, 436 Bryant, Phone #882-9380. Used cameras are hard to find, although Action Camera usually has some used equipment -- and an excellent gallery of classic cameras, not for sale. They are at 360 West Portal, Phone #564-0699.

You can try some of the camera shops downtown on like Kearny St., although they'll be wildly overpriced, they used to have a big supply (you know the places with a hundred or so cameras stuffed in the front window). I haven't been by those in a long while though. Gasser's has cameras as well. If you can get down to Palo Alto (south of SF about 30 mins), try Keeble Schucat. It's on California Ave.

I went into Gasser's once earlier this year when I was in SF. They had a nice *new* Fuji GA645W (the one with the wide 45mm lens) that they quoted me for $800. This was straight off the shelf and not demo or anything. I thought it was an excellent price for that camera considering what it sold for in EX+ from KEH and so on. Leads me to think they might have some good prices on used equipment.

I'd just like to plug Action Camera on West Portal not because I'm connected with it (I'm not!) but because it has a great collection of old cameras on display. Fun viewing. Also helpful if you are bidding 'blind' without ever having seen a particular classic camera. This store is off the beaten track, it's in a quiet residential shopping area.

Hey Michael, I just I realized where Action Cameras is located. They're down on the west end in that little white mini-mall on the lower level, right? I've been in there a couple of times, always real quick though (double-parked). You're right they do have a pretty good collection. They don't sell any of that stuff? BTW, I like your Poem-O-Rama site.

Hi Ray, that's right. I have bought only small items there. But I did have a Fed 5 shutter serviced. Expensive but reliable, I would say - it was a Russian camera repair person and the shutter is fine now. Unfortunately, none of their classic cameras are for sale. But occasionally I've seen an Olympus SD, or an OM-1, various cameras from the 70's for sale. Yes parking is a pain! I think for someone visiting SF and staying at a downtown/wharf hotel, West Portal is a little remote. But if they have friends in the Avenues, it might work.
Calumet is another place I'd recommend for film & supplies. There's a nice camera store in the San Bruno area, I can't recall the name of it though 🙁 ps. thanks for the comment about my poetry site and now I will stop stealing this thread
