I always find it hard to shoot along with a group, most of the time the others bring up too much attention, and for the way I like shooting it doesn't work well. but sometimes I do go out with folks from the local forum, it can be nice.

I thought exactly the same, but once, I have been attending some local photo walks with fellow photographers in Shanghai, it has been a great, fun experience.
The mode, you are shooting in such a group i different obviously.
When I go shoot pictures, I usually go alone during the late evening, night or early morning hours, to stroll the streets.
When in a group, I can share experience, can do things, I have not done much before and can experiment.
I never stopped down my lenses much beyond f2.8 for example - in the group, during daytime shooting, I practiced extensively stop down shooting with scale focussing, I stopped a lot of people in the street, to take up front portraits and took part in conversations - completely alien things to me before.
It can be a great add on to your knowledge.
