Scan Dual III and Mac OS/x 10.8

Help!
I'm using a friend's Apple and my Minolta scanner and having trouble. The machine locks up after loading the driver from Minolta.
The driver has always been problematic (buggy) on my PC too.
Is there an alternative driver out there, preferrably free?

Vuescan is not free, but almost, and it's updated almost every week, so if it does not work, it will! You can download and test for free.
