Scan Dual software vs vuescan

I usually use the KM software @ 2700 DPI and I am happy with the results; When I scan @ 5400 DPI I find Vuescan has far less grain aliasing, so don't need to clean up the files so much.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the older KM software is indeed a "piece of {drek}"
I'm using DS Elite Utility for Mac version 1.0.3. I think it dates from 2000.
It took a bit of fiddling with settings, but I've got a profile that seems to work pretty well for B&W. It has given me good results with slides as well.

I'm using the last (officially Konica Minolta) release of both the stand-alone scanner software and PS plug-in for my Minolta DiMage Scan Elite 5400 (I). I haven't had problems with either this or the previous version for general scanning work, and I also use the current version of VueScan (hardware is Power Mac G4 tower, 466mHz/1.5GB RAM/160mb HD + 40GB HD for Photoshop scratch disk). I use the standard-issue plug-in for a fair amount of color work (full discosure: the three most-common film types I use are, in order of quantity, Kodak Portra 160NC, Fuji Press 400/800, and Kodak Ultra Color 400), but tend to use VueScan for most b/w work (both conventional and Ilford XP2 chromogenic). Earlier versions of Minolta (pre-merger) scanners are likely left with the last versions of software made for them, although the SW that came with my previous DiMage Scan Elite 2900 was decent at the very least (yes, this scanner had no facility for focusing, either auto or manual, but i had next to no trouble with it in this regard), but VueScan allowed me to wring that little bit extra from that scanner nonetheless, making VueScan , IMO, something of a bargain in relation to its overall performance.
