ScanDual IV just croaked.

My trusty (?) ScanDual IV just died. How do results from the PlusTek 8200 compare to it? I don't shoot a lot of 35mm, so don't want to invest in a used Nikon scanner. Help, Please!

I went through 5 or 6 Dual Scan IVs over my 35mm career... I would just buy spares whenever I saw one under $100, at one point I owned three at the same time. Love the scan quality but their guts are junk. That said, like a wayward brat, sometimes letting them cool off/discharge static for a day and/or a sharp wack will set them straight.

FWIW the power supply and film carriers still sell for high prices on eBay so don't pitch them! Many electronic resellers sell Dual Scans without any accessories so people need those pieces to make a working scanner.

I just gave it (the scanner) a few healthy whacks on the table. It worked OK for 10 jpeg scans. I tried a couple of 3200 dpi tiffs and it locked up again. Letting it, and me, cool down now.

Luckily it's out of warranty and can't file a restraining order against you.

Watch out for Apple products though... You don't want any federal hate crime indictments.

35mm film scanners this quality and at that price are becoming quite scarce. I'm not in the US - unless, this one wouldn't be for sale any longer. 😉

I have a beloved Dual Scan II - just a bit lesser than the Dual Scan IV re. scan quality (2800dpi), but still way better than any Reflecta or Plustek thing.

My Dual IV suffered instant death after a fall of less than ten centimeters on a table. No repair was possible. So be careful with mechanical stimulation...

You'd be hard pressed to find a scanner that will work better for less than twice the price of another used Scan Dual III/IV.

Plus, you would have to learn all over again how to get good results from a completely different scanner. I think buying another would probably be the best choice. Plus, all the non-120 Plusteks are manual feed (they can't do a strip all at once).
