Scanner Foibles

Hello all,

I traded a RFF'er a Fed 5 for a Umax Astra 2200 scanner. It's a cheap flatbed with a transparency adaptor. I don't expect the best from it, I simply hope to coerce it into giving up something useable.

1) The Umax software is hideous. And that's it's good side... :bang: Anyone want to recommend a low cost 3rd party software for this beast?

2) I do have it physically working via my SCSI card, TWAIN and Photoshop 7. Attached is an example. Bear in mind that this is Tri-X that expired in May 1972, was shot at EI400 (1/300th@f16 Ansco Speedex Special "R"), and developed in Diafine. Way too many variables for sanity, but what the heck, life is like that. It's scanned and then equalized and greyscalled, but that's it. My utter lack of knowledge of Photoshop is now showing... 😛

May I suggest that you take a look at a scanning software product called Vuescan?

http://www.hamrick.com

They say on their website that they support the Umax Astra 2200 (SCSCI only) which is what I think you have.

I use Vuescan and have for some time with my Epson flatbed and my Minolta Scan Dual IV (running Linux, not much choice for me). I like it - some folks do not.

I hope you find this helpful!
