scanner light problem?

I have a Minolta Dimage Multi Pro scanner and i the best result's are you positive film colour or BW... with negatives i cant achieve the same results. I figure that is because the thickness of the film and the colour. can this be true? or the lamp, if there is any, must be substitute?
