I am looking for a scanner of good quality, easy to use software:) and will work for 35mm slides and negs. Should also work with 24X24mm negs and slides, if possible. BUT, it needs to work with a Mac using system 10.4.1 (older processor). Can't afford a newer MAC.
Don't think I want a flatbed. Speed is not important, but resolution should be good. Needs to work with USB (can't use SCSI).
Used is okay. Price less than $400, but under $300 better.
Any possibilities? Please let me know. Thanks, WES LODER

Which Mac?

Which Mac?

Why can't you use SCSI?
If you are using desktop, Adaptec cards made for Mac go for $12, at least last week they did, and they are plentiful.

Most Minolta SCSI scanners go for around $75. My Multi II works with VueScan in 10.4, and if you can run 10.3 you can use the Minolta software. If you have a serial number (I can send you mine) you can scan medium format at 2880 DPI, that's a 120 Mb file!

I've used my scanner on my old Lombard laptop, the last year for SCSI and it works very well. Old Mac laptops can be had for around $100 or less.

The image quality is there, and in many cases I prefer the look of my Minolta to my Nikon 9000ed.

Here's a 120 2880 shot made from my Bronica S in Fujichrome.

Biggest drawback? No ICE! Next issue, finding the right cables, but I think OWC has what you need new for $40, but if you look on line I'm sure you can get what you want used for less.

Flatbeds have really improved, and at your price point the Epson v700 might surprise you.

+1, while the v700 might not be quite as good as some of the best "dedicated film" scanners it will outclass most of the older ones. Also in its favor are the fact that it supports both the now somewhat "antique" Firewire and more current USB, both being typical interfaces on a MacOS 10.4.x vintage computer. The most important thing to consider is that EPSON still supports the antique (read: no longer supported by Apple) MacOSX versions back to 10.2.x

Plustek 7600i or even an 8200. I found one in the box for $100 USD. They work just fine as long as the only size you need to scan is 35 mm.

The Epson might also be supported natively on that old an OS X in the Image Capture app.
You might be able to dig up an older version of VueScan as well that would drive a lot of different scanners.

I moved to*a USB film scanner in 2000 (Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II) so there should be plenty of other models available.

One question: OS X 10.4.1 (Tiger) dates from late 2005, which was the PowerPC era. PowerPC systems were still supported up to OS X 10.5, but the G3 had been dropped.

Are you running on a G3 system? Doing image processing on a G3 system will be arduous. I did it back in the day, but moving even from G4 to G5 was so much more capable it is hard to express.
