SCANNER PROBLEM: Minolta Dual scan III and native software
DESCRIPTION: I have been scanning some old film for a while. Suddenly today the software DS Dual 3 stopped working.
ENVIRONMENT: I am running Windows Vista and Norton (it happened shortly after an update of Norton that required a re-boot) - it did work for a while though after re-booting.
ERROR MESSAGE: I get the error message: "DS Dual3 (32 bit) stopped working".
HAVE TRIED:
1) I can still reach the scanner through the Minolta "easy" software option, but would prefer to use the advanced software I already know.
2) There is also a connection through Vuescan (evaluation).
3) I have tried removing and re-installing the software to no avail. Twice.
4) Pleading, offering bribes and other acts of self-humilition have not worked either... Threatening to buy a Mac had no effect either.
5) Oh, and yes, I have tried to use the Windows error report facility :bang:
Has anybody experienced similar problems and perhaps have some ideas (apart from buying Vuescan).
Thanks in advance
Xpanded - or should that be Xscanded...

Does completely disabling the updated Norton software enable the old native Minolta software to run? Norton seems to have some conflicts at times with other software that one would think unrelated. That will only identify the problem, not resolve it. Good luck getting a response from Norton and we all know Minolta closed the doors years ago.

Good idea - tried it - but it does not make a difference unfortunately.
I do not think I have amble luck to get customer support

My first recommendation would have been to get VueScan, but you don't want to do that. Actually VueScan has the reputation of not working well with Minolta scanners but I've never had a problem with it and my Minolta DS IV.
I avoided Vista but without knowing your environment my first suspect would be the drivers which are presumably written for Win2K or WinXP. It's possible Norton has interfered but somehow I doubt it. If you think Norton is the problem uninstall it completely, uninstall the Minolta scanner software, reboot your machine and then reinstall the scanner software and try it.
Two bits of related though unasked for advice:
1. If you're using Norton for virus protection junk it and download and install free Avast!
2. Buy the pro version of VueScan with updates for life. It's good.

OK, it appears that there is no conflict with Norton.
Have you tried uninstalling the ScanDual III driver and reinstalling it? You can download it here if you no longer have the disk. Alternatively, you can try a later Minolta model scanner software. I seem to remember they are the same.
FWIW, I have used Vuescan with Minolta scanners going back to my original ScanDual II and swear by it. Consider than an alternative.

RESOLVED.
Thank Bob and Peter for your input.
Peter, I actually ended up doing (almost) what you suggested.
I downloaded a full new Norton and let it update. Then I removed the scanner software, reinstalled and (knock on wood) it works.
Maybe I should make a go at solving the €-crises ;-)
Cheers,
