I'm looking to buy a dedicated 35mm scanner, but I'm just trying to figure out which one. Resolution seems pretty self explanatory, but looking around I've noticed some discussion and comparison of various scanners' abilities at retrieving shadow and highlight detail. It seems that the way a scanner copes with the shadows and highlights is its true measure.

With that in mind I'm asking for some input. I'm looking for an affordable (up to about $500, but less is ok) scanner as capable as possible. I've been looking at the KM Scan Elite 5400, Scan Dual III or IV, Plustek Opticfilm, and Nikon IV or V, but I'm willing to consider any other suggestions.

I'll be scanning mainly B&W negs and some colour slide. Thanks for your help!
