I went to Stillwater, Minnesota, thinking I might shoot some river boats bound up in the ice on the St. Croix River, but it was so cold and dripping that I got sidetracked into the used bookstores (of which the town has several) and scored a nearly pristine first edition of Minor White's "The Eye That Shapes," a good first edition of "Edward Weston Nudes" from Aperture and "The Pirelli Calendar Complete" which is sort of what Playboy would have looked like if Hugh Hefner had a been a tire.

Both the White and the Weston books are extremely revealing of the photographers; the Pirelli calendars are also revealing, not of the photographers but of evolving ideas about sexual propriety in the last quarter of the 20th century; the photographers remain opaque.
