scratched external finder

i have a canon finder for my 28/3.5 lens.
when it arrived from that unnamed austrailian antique dealer there was a very long and deep scratch across the front glass piece.

(it was not mentioned in the ad, btw)

i use it but if the light is bright or i'm shooting towards a light source it flares from the scratch.

is there something i can do about this?

fill it with black ink? people do that to lenses.

Is it too deep to polish, Joe?
Is the square mask intact or also damaged?
Tainting it dark could indeed prevent flaring but makes the finder a little less bright.

Too bad, the Canon 35 finder is a nice one.

i tried the black felt pen, what i saw was a black line across the front.

it's the finder for the 28 and it is large.

like with a dremel tool?
the mask is fine.

i just took it apart again and cleaned it with goo gone, i even cleaned the inside glass a bit where i could reach it with a q-tip.
much better, more clear, less flare.
but the scratch is still visible at it's mid point.
the glass front of the finder looks like it was abused with sandpaper.

Somewhere I read that India Ink could be used to fill scratches on lenses so that might work on finders.

i'm also thinking about a clear acryllic floor wax.

might fill in the scratch a bit.

Try contacting a car windshield repair shop. They will have a clear filler that is used to repair scratches and cracks in windshields. If done correctly you can't tell the defect was ever present.
