Screen just died ....

I just got an RD1 from KEH. The screen worked intermetiantly for about 5 days, then on the camera's first real outing the screen quit working.

With KEH, I have the option of store credit, or repair.

What would you suggest, and why?

I don't know this camera. Could it possibly be a battery issue? If the amperes drop below a certain point, it cuts power to the LCD to conserve power? As I said -- it's a purely uneducated guess.

Otherwise, I'd send it back for repair, if you got the camera at a bargain price.

Tried recharging battery, and a new after market battery, same results w/ both, I have not metered the battery though.

LCD screens have been known to die. Since you say your screen only worked intermittently before going black, I'd be inclined to get the KEH credit.

There have been rare reports of the LCD screen dying: it simply stops working.

Solution

This may be fixable yourself if you're happy to dismantle your camera and have some knowledge of electrical circuits; otherwise, the camera will need to be sent off to Epson. Steve’s Camera Service Center, based in the USA, have experience of servicing and repairing the Epson R-D1 and may also be able repair the camera.

The most common reason for this fault is a blown internal fuse or a faulty switch on the LCD swivel mechanism, or a combination – the latter can cause the former.

I bought an RD-1 from a member here and it worked fine till I sold it to my son a month later, when the LCD went dead. He got a quote on the phone from Steve's for $360 for repair and CLA. I offered to take the camera back but he is getting it repaired. My answer to your question is that it depends on how much you paid for the camera and how bad you want it. For some people the RD-1 is worth the trouble, for others, too much trouble. There is no other digital RFs except M8/9.

I would let them repair it. KEH is reputable. I bought a 100mm Zeiss Planar from them, and when I got it the auto diaphragm didn't work right. They fixed it and it's been fine ever since. If they can't fix the Epson maybe they will send it someplace that can.

Sent it off to KEH, the happened to have a second one of the same spec, and they prefer to swap them out, keeping my fingers crossed!

Many RD1's have suffered from a loose connection that renders the LCD inoperable after rotating the screen from open to closed and back again. I had one that exhibited the behavior. It was intermittent. It would usually come back on after manipulating the screen back and forth once or twice. After experiencing the problem a few times, once I got it working again I just left the screen open, facing outwards, and never closed it again.

If I remember correctly, the problem is described on Steve's site and can be fixed permanently by beefing up the offending connection.

Just got a different one back ...

Just as I was due to ship mine back for repair, one in the same condition popped on on their site.

For the cost of shipping it back, I have a totally different camera, based on the serial numbers, and the screen seems to be working just fine.

Now to play with the 35mm color skopar!
