I am in the market for a high capacity SD card to replace the tiny one I got sitting around. For the moment the only camera I have that takes an SD card is my aging Ricoh GRD but I want to have a nice big one for when my GRD kicks the bucket and I need to get a new compact.

I checked out the GRD's manual but did not see anything about what kind of cards it can take. I traditionally use Sandisk cards so I guess I am looking for something in the ultra III 8-16 gigabyte range. I am not even sure that the GRD will be able to take such a thing. Anyone know?

It will probably take them, but unless it is rated for "SDHC" (high capacity) cards, it will very likely only be able to use 2GB. I'm pretty sure the GRD is not "hc"-capable, but you might ask Ricoh directly (or someone here who's tried it).

Make sure not only the camera but also the card reader will take them too. I got burned by a older card reader that would not read anything over 512MB and it took me way too long to figure out where the problem was.

No idea what the top stop is. You might check at Ricohforum.com. Run by a crazy guy (very nice) who loves Ricoh as much as many folks here love Leica....

Well what I had in the camera was a normal sandisk 2 gig card which worked ok but on trips it was not enough. I will see if I can go to a shop and try out some cards in camera if they let me, the shops here are notorious for buy first ask questions later.

On dpreview, their look at the grd showed them using a sandisk extreme 3 1 gig card, so at least it can take the faster cards, as for size, that is the question. Anyone here using a card that is more then 2 gb?

Yes today I went to the shops and it only takes a 2 gig, all the others dont show up at all. Pity. Oh well, need to look for a new compact camera soon anyway.
