Sean Reid and digital M

They need to build mind-share and interest. Leica has a loyal base, and they don't need to give their competition any early assistance in creating opposing ads.
Doug,

Who is Leica’s competition? Even Leica admits it is in a niche market. Right now, Epson is the ONLY competition in the market the digital M will be entering. So what is Epson’s “opposing” ad going to say if Leica announces to the world that the digital M will mount Viso’s and goggled lenses - “Leica’s camera is 3 millimeters shorter than ours”. Wow, that should make Leica shake in its boots.

Ok, I will agree with you that Leica may not have its camera design finalized but why doesn’t Leica just communicate with its customers and say that?

My problem with this whole situation is that Leica got into very deep financial difficulties because it isolated itself from its customers. It is now in the process of trying to catch up to the rest of the camera market and it appears intent on shutting us out again.

Are you telling me that Leica, in its current financial situation, doesn't need to "build mind-share and interest". That is exactly what Leica needs to do!

Yes... as of right now, the Leica M-bodies are a niche product.. but becaues it is a high quality product that can produce high quality images, it is acceptable to pay a premium for what you get.

On the other hand, if this digital M uses inferior sensor technology that doesn't measure up to its competitors AND still sell for much more $$, then no amount of brand-mystique or superior "build-quality" will make up for it. It is after all, the image that matters...
