Seattle RFF meet #2

Hmmm... mid-afternoon at 13th & Pike; not far from where I used to live at 14th & Mercer (& my first darkroom, in a closet). If the weather in the mountains is reasonable for bald tires, it might be doable.

I'm going to get a nice print from one of my good ones.


Just prints, no frames or anything like that. That means everyone should bring something to put their gift print in as well as the one they receive. A book, even.

And someone bring a calculator. Really.

I'll see what is going on. But SWMBO was wanting us to work on the yard this weekend, and the weather and family obligations messed that up. So next weekend might end up being the replacement.

I will definitely be there with 2maneekameras (or however he is spelling it now -- he keeps forgetting). We may be a little late. I will bring my pinhole Mamiya Super 23 Flat Top, among others.

After-meeting wrap-up? I was there first... Indeed I was in the area a couple hours early, just poking around the nearby neighborhood where I lived 40 years ago. But I held down a few tables at the Elysian until PlummerL and TetrisAttack appeared, then Shutterflower. Animated conversation ensued, and then Gordon Coale and friend TooManeeKameras (or however he spells it!) arrived. Nice get-together, and I have a PlummerL print to admire! Then I had to leave after only an hour or so, to get to a banquet dinner 110 miles away, with Dino Rossi giving an excellent speech.

plummerL, TetrisAttack, Gordon Coale, 2manycameras, Doug. . . thanks for coming. I got away with two great prints. One from PlummerL and one form TetrisAttack.

Gordon brought a nice pile of cameras and a Majestic tripod (he didn't bring it at first, but went and got it from the car after some response from us at its mention) that looked built for holding full size 16mm motion picture cameras.

There was a great deal of serious conversation - lots of philosophy


I like that place better than Hales Ales.

Again, thanks for coming, you've done a lot of driving today! We all stayed until 6:30 or so. I waxed philisophical for awhile and Gordy brought in the meatiest tripod I think I've ever seen. I could do chin-ups off of it. I'm not, uh, the biggest guy around but I was impressed.

I've now got a shutterflower print, a whole lot of new knowledge about large format camera lenses, and a healthy respect for the knob-wind leicas, feds, zorkies, and hasselbladskis. I gotta say though, the dim little fuzzy yellow rangefinder patches in some of those older cameras are tough to use. Truly, I'm a spoiled photographer. 🙂

Oh, and the Elysian gets my vote for any future meetups - WAY more courteous staff than last time ("Would y'all like separate checks?") and a large sunken back area that's nicely out of the way.

I mentioned arriving in Seattle early... one of the things I had in mind looking at was the palm tree growing under right under the I-5 express lanes off Lakeview Ave south of Roanoke St. Yes, happy to see it's still there, must be unique. Indeed it's grown and looks healthy too. Now it seems well-tended, with moisture-meters set in the soil around it. But 35-40 years ago it was just down a dirt bank in what must be one of the dryer places in Seattle! I've never known how it got there. It was a fun place to do a little off-road motorcycling, but now that seems to be turning into a more structured place with paved walkways and such. Of course I snapped a few snaps of the happy palm tree... 🙂

Another of what I hope will be somewhat regular meets. The Elysian does make a great place to have a get together. I am now the proud owner of the (in)famous Juicebar Lady print from Doug, as well as a fine print from ShutterFlower. Thanks again! Fascinating spectrum of experience. Attached are some shots from my Contax G2 using Kodak BW400CN.
