... on the x100. part of it is my newish glasses, which allow me to easily focus on the lcd screen with the reading windows. autofocus is the other key to my lcd enjoyment.
for example, if i am framing a subject that has straight lines, i am far more likely to nail a level horizon or other key line(s) with the lcd than i am with RF or SLR.
how 'bout y'all? anybody favor lcd over ovf, evf or slr screen?

I've discovered my sight needs cylinder correction, as straight in VF means not enough straight in image. So LCD sometimes gets it's use...where LCD is at my use and situation allows it. Sometimes LCD blinds out, you know.

this "discovery" is helping me further appreciate digital photography. my youngest son bought his bride-to-be a nex-5n with kit zoom for her birthday. here is another surprise for me: i really, really like the form factor of the nex. i dream now of a nex-5n or similar with pancake 50mm equivalent ...

VF... and on my OM-D I have even gone so far as to put it in a mode so that the SCP is always showing on the LCD and I shoot through the VF. I even have preview turned off totally which makes it really like using an SLR. Faster too since that preview doesn't get in the way of seeing the action. I have had glasses for all of the 40+ years I've been shooting and so have gotten very used to using all kinds of cameras with them. Works for me...

Well, when I say VF I really mean EVF...

Sure, I do. With my wife's Coolpix, works well. Otherwise, with my Barnack IIf, M2, and in B&W they're a little off horizontal the way I've been doing since Eisenhower.

Hard to be a serious person and admit these things.

Just imagine its a view camera the right way around and up. And all is well. If at all considering digital viewing is better than optical; mouthwash! 😉

On the subject of view cameras, what happened to your 8x10 fantasy by the way?

Composing on the lcd of my new mobile phone rejuvenated my interest in photography, and would go one further, to say that composing on an lcd with touch screen is particularly enjoyable. I'm back to using the viewfinders of my rangefinder and slr's now, but that has really only been down to the difficulty in composing on the lcd in sunlight, and in this specific case the poor image quality of the 3mp camera in my phone. Composing via the lcd definitely has its place, and as noted, it is the way many composed on ground glass in the past. I also see a lot of street photographers shooting this way too.

LCD when it's on a tripod

LCD when it's on a tripod

When shooting handheld, I cannot use the LCD because I need to hold the camera at arms length (at least!).

When the camera is on a tripod and we are in dim light, I very much prefer the LCD for composing. Very much !

I prefer one of these 🙂

Seriously, I use the LCD on my G3 when I can't bend down to get low level shots, I hardly ever use the LCD on the X100 because it is fixed. I always say that if is best for you it is best for you.

It took me long enough to get used to upside-down images that I couldn't see without a focusing cloth. I can't seem to make the additional jump to right way up LCDs that I can't see without a focusing cloth, the more so as they're tiny and not sharp enough to focus with.

Cheers,

R.

I like composing on an LCD. To me it's very similar to using a ground glass, and I like getting the camera out from between my face and that of my subject(s). The requirement is that a camera have a viewfinder that helps you frame your shot, and focus. I'll use whatever works for me, regardless of opinions on forums about what's cool or not.

Not really, unless I'm doing a job that requires tilt-shift-lenses on my 5DII in which case composing on the lcd with the camera on a tripod is really nice.
