That's what I did last spring, and what I'm doing again in winter (of course, having a room to crash in helps). I might be too exquisite, but I've been living in LA for a year, and I personally find it to be a depressing, boring city. I can't wait to finish college and run off to England or back to Argentina.
Anyways, there's some good advice here. I'd check the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena as well.

The site of La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles is now called Olvera Street.
In the 1990s, Kuruvungna Springs, a natural spring located on the site of a former Tongva village on the campus of University High School in West Los Angeles, was revitalized by the Gabrielino/Tongva Springs Foundation. The spring, which flows at 22,000 gallons per day, is considered by the Tongva to be one of their last remaining sacred sites and is regularly used for ceremonial events. You should also make an effort to visit Watts Towers.

Holy crap there is a lot to see - Hmm, well I went to Santa Monica pier last night, had a good time and chatted with a Russian immigrant fishing off of the pier. He taught me how to fish and told me he once caught a shark (!?)
Tonight I think I'll head to Venice Beach.
Found out about the traffic last night on my way to SM, saw the traffic heading the other direction and knew I'd be staying a while.
Tomorrow, I think Hollywood - especially with all of the excellent suggestions.
Friday, the observatory and the Annenberg Show of Photography which has been recommended by my PJ instructor. Also, the photo exhibit is showing last years POYi winners, of which a friend of mine is an honorable mention.

Thank you all again for the superb suggestions. I'll post photos when I get them developed. Might take a few weeks as I shot mostly Velvia last night and I have to mail it off for processing. I thought about shooting B&W, but for some reason California and the beach are drawing me to show the colors.
