"Gone! All the photos of the kids when they were growing up... gone. I deleted a folder... the photos are gone!"

Before the punchline (buy software X) was announced from the television speaker, I thought "Should've used film".

I've not been using film for a year... I'm doomed. :)

The actress saying those lines is Esther Hall, who seems to be all over British TV at the moment (Rome, Midsommer Murders, True Dare kiss). The advert might be a bit naff but she at least is pleasant to look at! :)

Personally, I'd get those cameras and lensmounts wrapped in gaffertape, invest in some lenshoods, and request the labs to stop underdeveloping the film. Those adverts look horribly washed-out.

Software X indeed. That is just the point. There is much sofware, including free software, that will also do the job. What is worse and does have to guarded against is a drive failure. Even then if you have the money and there was no physical damage, it can be recovered. It can also be expensive. At today's drive's costs, it just makes more sense to have more than one drive with you photos. Of course, CD's or thumb drives can also be used.

As mentioned, film isn't bad either. :D
