I know it's an slr, but I just received a seemingly perfect VSL-3E but can't get the self timer to work. There's a lever on the left side, and the instruction manual says you just move the lever to the "10 second" mark to engage it, but that doesn't work--it just takes the picture when I push the shutter. Does anyone have experience with this, or does it simply not work? Thanks in advance.

Cameras. I has it.
Is there a release button on the self-timer switch itself?
I'm not familiar with the camera, but looking at photos there appears to be something atop the switch that could be pressed. I'm thinking that's what would be pressed instead of the normal release.

You have an a VSL that works!! I've never been so lucky. Self timer is stuck because probably it never was used. Not uncommon with a lot of cameras.
