Sellers Regret

As a partial response to the question posed in Ricks earlier thread' "Keep M Equipment? ", how many forum members have sold Leica equipment only to reverse their decision and purchase replacements for what they had sold?

If it isn't oo painful to recall, what were you thinking?

Had an M3 DS about 1970 -- sold it --regretted it.
Bought an M3 about 1975 (DR Summicron). Sold it about a year later. Regretted it for 25 years.
Got another M3 in 2003. Kept is about a year. Traded it for a Nikon F100. I like the F100 but wish I still had the M3.

A local photo store has several M3s and a M2 on consignment. Now if I sold all my Russian camera, AND my Mamiya C220 AND My Nikon FM AND threw in some extra cash. . . .

I also had a really nice early Leotax and a Canon IV and. . . .

Never got Seller's Remorse. I did get Buyer's Remorse, but then I fixed it quickly by turning it into Seller's Joy.

But no, Seller's Remorse about Leicas... Nope. Sorry. Can't even think about it.

I'm not good at selling stuff, so it just accumulates. The few items I have sold or traded, I regret it. But I still have the M2+35'cron+90T-E I got 38 years ago... and I have no remorse about keeping 'em! 🙂

i have bought and sold more gear than i can remember, of course we're talking over a 40 year period.

the only real regret i have is selling my cle gear. i had 2 complete sets, 2 bodies, 2 28/40 & 90 lenses.
that camera was just so nice, felt great in my hands and the lenses were lovely.

I sold a late M2 only to buy an early button rewind M2 later that same day! 😱p Still got it.
I swapped a screwmount 35mm f2 Summicron for an olive paint Leica M3 which i still have and use everyday, its showing some lovely brass. I still have my first Leica, a 1938 IIIb and my first M leica, an M3 in chrome which i still have.
Cant get enough of these damn Leicas, now im trying to buy a IIIg 😱)

I have never sold a piece of Leica gear. I have sold LOTS of stuff, but not Elica.

Interesting thread. I'm working on getting my first Leica product, so I can't comment. It does seem that Leica equipment encourages a tendency to strong retentive behavior, at least from the outside looking in. Funny, I feel that way about my leaf shutter RFs, even though I use them sparingly after the purchase of my Bessa.

I have sold bunches of stuff recently, all for good reasons though and without regret.

Lets see, I haven't sold Leica stuff, but some nice lenses that would fit on a Leica, 35 Ultron, 40/2 CLE Rokkor. Both excellent, excellent lenses, but no regrets (though these two get me closest to it).

Sold a Leica M2 and Canon 28/3.5 with finder in a moment of financial panic a few years ago. Replaced the body with an M4-2, but still miss the M2.

The leicas I have bought were all second-hand "finds." I am afraid I will never be able to find them again in such condition at the same prices, so I have never sold them.

I've never had sellers regret ( except for a 1970 mach one mustang fast back but thats for a different forum!!)

But I've given cameras away, mainly to girls I was Seeing at the time and then never got them back............

I gave my M3 to my Dad with no regrets; eventually got rid of all my R3 and R4 gear also with no regrets. Leica is just another nice camera -- not worthy of "grail" status in my book.

I am experiencing some Keeper's remorse. Only very slightly, only a few days now. I am in the happy situation of having two early 50 'crons. One DR with glasses, one regular Rigid. So the DR does not fit the CLE, while the Rigid fits both CLE and M2.
The DR will end up being sold. There is a hood coming my way, so it will be complete except the caps. And in very good condition. Not mint but very good.

Anyone?

I've been spending coin piecing together a 'digital darkroom,' and I sometimes think of selling some of my recently acquired M gear. For me the M offers durability, manual control and relatively small size, and my FM3a almost meets those requirements (the 28/45/105 AIS lens kit will fit in a small Domke bag). FM3a also enjoys loverly Nikon flash units with TTL flash.

It's funny, I've been editting/categorizing a years worth of photos lately, and a surprising number of keepers were taken with a little Rollei AFM35 P&S with no real manual focus control and only aperture priority exposure control and worst, a crappy little finder. OTOH, that contrasty 38mm lens delivers up the goods, I guess.

I know it's just a camera, but I just can't do it. Fact is, for whatever reasons I love shooting my Ms. Just bought an even smaller Domke F803 tiny satchel, and it holds two M bodies with lenses (28/2 and 50/1.5), holds an SF24, small Twinmate meter and a CV 4/21 in the middle pouch, and is still about the perfect small, discrete carrry around town bag. It reenergizes my faith in the the Leica way of shooting 🙂

I also hear so much about regret selling M's I'm loathe to do it 🙂 I bought nice condition used M6TTL's in the last year, and I don't see prices declining, especially on the .58 model. I guess I'll keep them and cross financial bridges when I come to them.
