I am planning to sale my Leic M6 TLL 0.85 and three Leica lenses on a popular internet auction site (guess which one 😛). I have a few little questions I was wondering if anyone has experience with them then maybe you can help me.

1. They charge you a listing fee and it is rather expensive. I was wondering is the fee refunded if you sold the item and pay them the final price charges? Or is it you have to pay both?

2. How does the relisting work if the item does not sale?

3. What is that Paypal fee people talk about?

I do not have experiences with them so I am just a bit confused about how it works...

Have you ever sold or bought with them before? If not, then be aware that your low (zero?) feedback score might turn a few folks off...

1 - I'm not sure what you mean here. You pay a listing fee, then a percentage of the sale. So...I guess yes, you pay both.

2 - You just click a button and it's relisted. You get the chance to modify little things, of course. And you pay the listing fee again.

3 - If you accept credit cards via paypal, then you lost like 3-4% of the monies to Paypal. If you set it up so that you can only accept payment from bank accounts (ie - cash), then you get it all.

Joe had a thread back a little bit where he accidentallly switched to the "premier" option, where you can accept cards. Avoid that if you don't want to lose the 3-4%. However, be aware that some people use only credit cards with Paypal.

Thank you Allan.

I find they charge quite a bit of money and that would make me increase the reserve of my items. Is there a better place to sale than at the bay?

Other than here on RFF? I'd try photo.net. apug.org and perhaps photogon.com (not sure if the last one charges anything). You can even try craigslist.org if you have one for your area.

I believe I can answer most of your questions about That Site.

1) As I have experienced it, you have one or more pictures of your item and then a description, with your opening price -- if it's an auction-- a buy it now price, if you want to give one, and your shipping and handling fees in the U.S. and, if you want, overseas. Then you can choose your method of payment, paypal, money order, cashier's check, etc...You can also exclude unsavory buyers or countries...
You are charged a listing fee, depending on what you are asking...Your first pix is free, you are charged for each other pix...If it doesn't sell, you can relist and pay all over again...You do NOT get money back...When it sells you are charged a fee by Paypal -- if you use Paypal -- based on the final payment...If you use a money order, you can cash it at the Post Office if it's a US money order...If it's Western Union, it's a big hassle to cash and you pay a fee...
2) see above on relisting...it ain't difficult and not expensive either time...
3) The Paypal fee, paid by the seller only, is approximately 4% at our level; major dealers probably pay less...
4) If you have other questions, just ask thinkofcole@aol.com

[Remember, you also have to answer buyer's questions [politely], like how much to ship the item to Bulgaria [more likely France, Italy, China], decide whether you want to offer insurance, whether you want to repack an item you guessed would cost $6.95 to ship to Belgium by air when it actually will cost $13.75' where to get boxes cheaply; how to pack with old newspapers, popcorn, where to get free (used) boxes, where to buy wrapping tape, envelopes, rubber stamps, a printer, a digital camera, digital camera batteries, a battery recharger, etc. etc.

I might add that should you decide to sell on That Site, I have always recommended --because you get more and you also keep the individual prices lower for buyers -- that you sell each item separately...(1) the camera body (2) each lens separately...(3) each filter separately (4) the Leica leather case separately (5) each Leica lens case separately, if any...You might include the front and rear Leica caps with the lens but they are, in fact, worth selling apart... You can determine how much to ask by checking "complete listings" on That Site...

As for other places to offer your Leica equipment for sale, there is the MUG, the LUG, the IDCC, the Photonet, this site and probably others [see Yahoo Groups] ....Some allow you to list whenever you want; others have only certain days....

You also mentioned having a reserve on your camera ; I believe That Site charges a fee for that, too but I have never used it...I set my opening price at the least I will be glad to get, if it sells....regards, bob cole

THat place is a good way to get a good price. But only if you have decent feedback. Otherwise, unfortunately, potential purchasers will assume there's a chance you're one of the many scammers who pervade the site. Your feedback rating also affects the PayPal protection that prospective buyers get - and personally, if an auction doesn't have PayPayl protection (which is the most reliable way of getting a refund if the deal goes sour), I don't bid. I suggest you either build up a Feedback of rating of at least 10 first, or sell the items on here/p.net.

Another option is to get a friend to sell it for you, but for obvious reasons, you have to be good friends!

Yes, it's true; Feedback from buyers is a big help in determining whether a seller is responsible but you have to start somewhere, with no feedback...If you want to sell, say, a Leica, you take at least four clear pix, front, back, top and bottom...Plus others that show serious dents or dings, if any...Then you describe it as best you can, trying hard not to say anything that a buyer can later say ain't so...

This business of refunds is a very delicate subject, including assertions that the item never arrived, etc. etc., and is a subject all by itself. And practically all dealers treat shipping and handling charges as so sacrosanct that , regardless of anything else, s&h fees are never returned... One dealer sold me a lens as a 50mm/f3.5 Leica Elmar and when it arrived it was a Russian copy and I had a little difficulty convincing him otherwise, until I sent him one of his own listings with a real Elmar, with the serial number on the black ring that the one he sold me did not have...He refunded my money, minus a $10 s&h fee after I paid $10 to send back the lens, so it cost me $20 plus a lot of time to get a refund...

And that's only a very minor problem on That Site...Still, I love dealing there...regards,bob

1. It depends on what your definition of expensive is. The eBay listing fee is a function of the individual fees for various services e.g. starting price of the item, the reserve price,(if any), Buy it Now (if used), Make Offer (if used); start at a different time than immediate (if used) , number of pictures of item, bold face, highlighting etc. etc.

Considering your selling a M6-TTL I would not think the end listing fee would be very expensive.

2. Relisting is simply "renewing" your listing if item doesn't sell and you pay a new listing fee.

2a. Remember you also will pay a fee after sale on the basis of final selling price.

3. If you use PayPal to accept payment from your buyer they will charge you 3%(?) of the selling price as a transaction fee.
