Selling my M6, need a cheaper replacement camera

Nikon FE, FM, or FE2

+ 28/2.8 AIS

+ 50/1.8 Series E (really, none of the Nikkor 50's are substantially better, and these can be had for a song).

+ nearly any short tele made for the F mount. (85/1.8, 85/2, 105/2.5 etc).

And you're done.

Later, you can add the AIS 180/2.8 ED -- one of my favorite lenses ever.

Note: the Nikkor 28's are generally better than the 35's, and a bit better than the 24. IMO.
 
+1 for the FM2. I regularly take it out with the M2. Color for the FM2, 28mm and B/W for the M2, 50mm.

The FM2 is the best camera I have that approaches the feel of the M2.

Have to agree with this as well. Between the Bessa R with some Canon glass and the ME Super with a 50 1.7 or 1.4, you've got your work cut out for you. Good luck deciding! 😀
 
My vote for Bessa R : I use it beside my m7 and it's a joy to use. Or Nikon FM2 if you prefer the SRL route. Both small, simple and reliable.

Sticking to RF's, what's a Contax G1 + normal, or 35mm lens worth these days in user condition?

I picked up a Pentax MX for $25, sold it to my local store, well, applied it to my balance, for $50 and they sold it for $100. Can depend on where you get in on the food chain?

The guy begged me to give him $25, with case, caps, etc.

Of course if I was actually looking for one---

I have sat next to the KEH buyer and listened to him quote prices, quite interesting, he was not giving away the farm on anything-- and there was a line of folks 40 feet long.

A prominent dealer friend probably gives away 100 fixed lens RF's a year to schools, does not have the time to go through most of the garden variety ones.

No one mentioned the Retinas?

Is this a "get me over" purchase, or are we talking "life long" user ?

Need more information from OP! Do you want to stick with a rangefinder? If so, are you willing to go without on-board meter? There are SO many options for really cheap SLRs...not Nikon or Olympus or Pentax, but Konica, Minolta, etc. And old Canon FN setup with three primes...

Fixed lens rangefinders are plentiful and great cameras. Konica Auto S2. Olympus SP or LC or RC or RD.

But if we have an idea, RF or SLR, metered or not, that would help.

At what price will you be letting it go? If spending 500 bucks on a replacement, what will be your difference to pay bills from?

I'm saying if there is say 300 bucks in bills, why not use the M6 to make some money and pay them?

In case you are planning to sell M-mount lenses as well, consider a known-good FED-2 as a replacement. It has a form factor that resembles the Leica M's more than other FSU RF's, it's finder is comparitively bright and a good one will last forever. My 11-yr old son has one too. Or get a known-good and clean Zorki-6. Forget about the other FSU RF's, they are too far from a Leica and will likely annoy you.

A rigid chrome Industar-61 50/2.8, a Jupiter-12 35/2.8 and a Jupiter-9 85/2.0 and you will be ready to rock.

Selling something now that you might want to buy again later (at greatly increased cost) is seldom a good idea. Of course I don't know your situation; I'm going from personal experience, having sold a beautiful 0.85 M6-TTL for slightly less than I paid for it (because I needed the money... or so I imagined) and now a couple of years later I could not get a camera in similar condition for several hundred $ more than what I paid in the first place.

If you want something "cheap and cheerful" that will be fun to shoot, I'm going to go against the Nikon/Oly grain in this thread and suggest a Minolta X-570 or X-700 and 50/1.4. Excellent condition 35/2.8 Rokkors are cheap but the 1.8 is hard to find and pricey. To save even more, get a 50/1.7 instead. Even with an overhaul including new capacitors by John Titterington you'll still be well under $500.

Good luck with your choice, but if it was me, I would seriously try to keep the M6. Trust me, you're going to want another one...
