Selling One, Keeping One

I've decided that I will begin working with one M8 body and one R-D1 body. I'm awaiting an exchange camera from Epson (which should be new, but I'll see when it arrives) which I am going to check over for all the potential R-D1 problems. If it checks out, I will then be updating it with R-D1S firmware and selling it. My other R-D1 has various scrapes and scuffs so I'll keep that one because it isn't as pretty.

So, I make this post for two reasons.

1) If you're interested in the camera when it comes in, feel free to PM me.

2) I'm not sure what the camera will be worth and would love to hear what they've been selling for. I see that Ritz has them in stock still at $3000 but imagine they're much less from Robert White. E-Bay seems to have just one and I haven't come across many others. Anyone know or have relevant anecdotes to share? Yes, yes, I can already anticipate the "sell it to me for $200" posts.

I know the R-D1 quite well <G> but I haven't shopped for one since 2004.

Cheers,

Sean

I've been following some RD-1s (not RD-1S) Sean, and they seem to sell in the $2100 range.

Cheers.

OK, that's very helpful. Thanks very much. Anyone else have some anecdotal data?

Cheers,

Sean

In the Uk Robert White are selling RD1s for £1400.00 inc vat (appx 2662USD).I got one of the last RD1 from them via e/bay for just over £1200.00 inc vat/ carriage. Recently Calumet in the UK sold a new RD1 for £700.00 on e/bay but I dont imagine that to happen again.By the way Sean, thanks for your reveiws of the RD1.I got a good one and love it!

You're very welcome and thanks for the information. I still love the R-D1 too as well as the M8 so I'm going to work with one of each.

This will not be of any help - but it is still selling for $3.100 (inklusive 25% VAT) in Norway and Denmark

Thank you.

On ebay...two have come up for auction recently...neither were bid over 2k, one didn't meet the reserve but had a buy-it-now price of $2500, and the other was someone's first auction...so O feedback. The zero feedback auction, unless it was a scam, ended up selling for under $1700.

Thanks. I'll ignore the zero feedback one and consider the other into the mix.

I've been scouting around recently and have found two for about $2400. I'd be very interested in yours--especially because it was YOUR reviews of this camera that persuaded me to consider getting one in the first place. (I even sent you a note earlier this week expressing my thanks for your analysis and insightful writing.) And now, here comes that very camera of yours up for sale!

I'm hoping that the replacement camera will be here from Epson next week. I need to check it to make sure everything is OK and then let's talk. Thanks for the comments on my reviews.

You are the cause of my RD1 mania. Mine will go out of warranty in march and was wondering what your take on continued "service" is. So far Epson seems to simply replace cameras not fix them. That policy can't go on forever. What happens if I return my camera within the warranty period and they don't have any new, old stock left?

Hi Sean,
Just ordered a new R-D1s to a regular photo shop in Italy for EUR 1,890 (USD 2,400) including VAT (20%) and Epson warranty.
Should make USD 2,000 for extra-European buyers + shipping, insurance and possibly import taxes.
Best,
LCT

Hi Sean,

Last month I bought my R-D1s for €1800,- directly from Epson Germany (that is including vat). Never been happier with a camera! Good luck selling yours and good luck with the Leica. I'm looking forward to reading part two of your review!

Best, Nick

Hi Rex,

I have no idea. Perhaps it would go back to Japan for work? I still love the camera too, though. That's why I'm keeping one.

Cheers,

If its the same one from Camulet that I saw on EBay then I think after a few late bids it finally went for 950 GBP about $1800.

Since Robert White dropped the new price to 1400 GBP the few RD-1's I have seen secondhand in dealers here have ranged from 900 - 1200 GBP. I think Jacobs, New Oxford St. have a fairly good one at the moment (but with the common problem of the rubber covering lifting) at 950 GBP. My experience with them (where I brought my RD-1 new) is if you part exchange with them they usually (provided the want the equipment) give you about 60% of their selling price.

A good practice if selling privately is to split the difference between a dealers offer and selling price. i.e here about 800 - 950 GBP = about $1500 - 1800, but I'm not sure how this relates to selling secondhand in the states though.

Yes, Camulet have sold more than one RD1 recently on e/bay and the lowest priced one was sold for the starting bid of £700.00 -one bidder only.
