In a thread a long time ago about malls prohibiting photography, I said that the next time I was in there and thought of it, I would take a shot of the sign with the litany of no-nos, one of which is photography.

Here it is. Sorry for the reflection of the soda machine. I swear I didn't notice it when I took this. I've adjusted the levels a bit to make all of the wording show up.

Yeah, I guess I broke the one rule by taking this. Maybe they will come and arrest me. LOL! 🙂

Rule #6 makes me wonder how you got inside. 😉

So were you feeling defiant or combative? What would you have done if some security guy actually walked up to you and started hollering? Did you have a plan? Just wondering...

Thanks for posting this as a reminder as I need to find out my local mall's rules.

I would be surprised if any mall issued written approval to anyone but a professional perhaps shooting for a store or article about the mall.

Uh ... ??? (I guess I do get catty every so often ...)

Defiant, probably. Combative, no.

Well, I thought about it after. I probably would have played dumb, apologized, and just walked out. I doubt if they would have tried to detain me for something like that.

I guess I could have said that I didn't read it until I took the photo. 🙂

Seriously, that mall and the parking structure are very well patroled. I do see the security people all over the place, and driving around in the parking structure. The place does kind of have the reputation of being a hangout for kids and gangs, so they do make security quite conspicuous.

Sometimes rules are made as "contigencies". Although you can never predict the behavior of an over-eager security guard in a "uniform", I suspect that if someone was just snapping a picture of a friend it may be "overlooked".

But that fact that they posted the rule means they have "given you notice" and they can readily enforce it. Remember, the mall is private property, and a long time ago the Supreme Court rejected the argument that they serve as "modern town squares" such that you have rights to free speech and assembly etc.

Too bad, since for most Americans the mall is the "street" and the place where photogs would love to go street shooting.
