Canon LTM Serenar 50/1.8

Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Benny,

Both of my Canon 50/1.8 lenses are branded Serenar. The look is really cool. Optically, the Canon 50/1.8 is superb.

I'll second that sentiment. An A+ lens. Is a German lens better? Not enough for me to spend 5 to 10 times the cost of Canon.

Nice pix in this thread. I'm another happy canon camper. I've got one of the chrome and black 50/1.8 lenses, and it's my go-to 50 for general, all-round use. Really nice bokeh, and pretty good for b&w too.

I agree that it's under rated and hence under priced. These all chrome lenses certainly feels as if they were made to last.

Which version do you have? Type 1 or Type 2 or both?

Cheers,

Those are beautiful photos, Steve. Nice job. You keep getting better.

I need to get out Peter's book on Canon lenses!
Will get back to you here,Benny.

Besides the weight, I wonder if there are any other differences between the Type 1 and Type 2 Serenar f/1.8 50mm lenses? Perhaps an optical enhancement in terms of coating or even the design of the lens element?

Cheers,

Oddly enough, I've just won one of these on eBay myself.

£46 seemed a bargain for a lens described as having no faults (cosmetically the chrome looks well used)

Really love what people have posted here too, hope I can post some results of my own soon too! Great work everybody :)

That gives me two 50s, a Summar for that wonderful vintage look and this as my more go-to 50. And the weird thing is I always hated 50mm, until my Canon 35mm broke and for over a year all I had was a 50mm -- suffice to say, I still love 35mm but I really grew to love the 50mm aspect too.

Stiff focus lens? pop the lens into the oven at low temperature, around 40deg C and leave it for 20 minutes. That should melt the dried grease a little.

No wonder my lenses work so well here in Texas. Austin has had a 35C+ heat wave for a couple of weeks now.

I just bought a Serenar 50/1.8 from a fellow RFFer. Can't wait to try it out on my P!
:D

I was looking for one, to complement a set of 28, 35, 135 Kyoei and Komura lenses, since these brands never had a 50mm in their line-up. An 85mm will follow later along the line. I had a choice between Nikkor and Canon glass, looking for sixties-era lenses to complement the line-up.

Somewhere last week it was suggested in a thread you should be able to get a nice one for around USD 150. Where would you guys turn to to find a lens in that price segment? Surely not evilbay?

Yes indeed, eBay. I got mine plus an IVSb for a little over 200.

What are the chances that you can find such a deal again the next three months? Not high at all.

A guaranteed clean Canon 50/1.8 is a "good buy" when the price is between $125-$150. At $100, it becomes a "great buy". Add a IVsb and get it for $200, then you have a "gift from heaven buy".

Well...the slow speeds are off. ;) But maybe you're right, it was a killer deal...
