Serenar 85/f2 - focussing issues

Dear all,

I am using a Serenar 85 /f2 LTM combined with a Canon 7.
I miss the focus quite often even at f8 on subject 5 or 8 meters far.

I am wondering if it is a shift focus issue (a Sonnar formula?), rangefinder misalignment (the focus is ok with a Jupiter 8 50mm) or from the Serenar itself.

Have you tried opening the back (with no film in the camera, of course) and checking focus on ground glass taped to the film gate compared with what the rangefinder gives you? You can use frosted tape or, preferably, a 35mm SLR camera's ground glass/focusing screen.

That would be my first step.

Test in some way but I would guess it's the lens. If the 50 is in focus and you're shooting at that distance and aperture...
