VIVITAR SERIES 5 MEDIUM YELLOW K-2 SCREW-IN FILTER

can a series filter screw in also?
i thought the purpose of series was to fit into a holder.

would a screw in lens hood marked 5-S be a series 5 lens hood?
(this particular hood does not have a retaining ring for a filter)

and is a series 5 hood usually 34mm? (as in fitting my 34mm filter size canon 100/4 lens)

much thanks and i really hope this makes sense.

Joe, I have several series VI filter holders with different sized openings to slip on lenses. So the series number is the size of the filter it holds, while the size of the holder varies in mm. For instance I have a series VI filter holder sized 31mm and another, also series VI, sized 36mm.

geez frank, that's not what i wanted to hear!

so i took my trusty metal ruler and ran it across the opening of my hood and it measures 3 cm/ 30mm.
so this hood won't fit my 100/4 lens (if it ever shows up) which has a 34mm filter size.

it a good thing this is a child friendly site!!!!!

joe:)

Joe, I have a Series VI filter holder with retaining ring, with a 33mm opening you can have if it suits your needs. The metal tabs can be pushed open slightly to accomodate that extra mm no problem.

that's very generous frank. let it wait till i get the lens and then i'll see if this one fits or not.
ideally, i'd like a canon hood but the usual asking price for the hood is about the same as for the lens. kinda nuts!

Okay, I just did this on the Canon 100mm F4: The retaining ring of the Series V holder is closer to 33mm to accommodate the 30mm diameter filter. I lines the retaining ring portion of the holder with several wrappings of teflon tape, the type sold for plumbing fixtures. It is tight enough to hold the series V UV filter in place; took some extra windings to hold on to the lens when used with the push-pn lens cap. The lens cap is tight, on the filter ring and of the lens. For a lens shade this will probably work until you come up with the correct size. They do not make 34mm filters like they used to.

Joe

Which lens are you trying to hood?

good news!
i found a lens shade in 34mm for 5 bucks (american) on ebay.

i think i'll special order a 34 yellow from hoya unless i can find one locally. (doubtful)
