Leica LTM Service for Leica II in Melbourne Australia?

Hi All,

I have been reading for some time because of an interest in this style of photography and due to the nice work which is frequently posted here. I have been in SLR world though and have not had cause to post anything until now.

I have recently inherited my Grandfather's Leica II and would like to find out if anyone in Melbourne has experience with an honest and reliable place to get a CLA done on old leica gear.

Slower speeds (40, 30, 20) are sticking a bit and the grease in the 50 Elmar 3.5 is so dry that the lens wont come out and focus is very stiff.

I had my 55 2.8 micro nikkor CLA'd by Camera Lane in Ltl Bourke St and was very happy with how it performs now that it is actually clean and I can turn the focus ring but I think that they send it away to someone.

Also the micro CLA cost about $60 what should I be expecting as reasonable for the Leica body and lens?

My recommendation is to go to Camera Exchange, in Lonsdale Street between Queen and Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. They should be competent enough to make a great CLA work on your Leica II.

If you want to send your Leica II up to Brisbane there is a bloke called Charles Woodhouse who runs Carlwood Camera Repairs. He specialises in screwmount Leicas and would be happy to service your Grandfather's camera for A$100 plus the iniquitous GST plus postage, and $50 for the Elmar.

I can recommend Charles. He did a great job on the two Leica IIIf's I bought off EBay and after a supposedly experienced Leica technician in Sydney had done them over. Charles found (and fixed) a number of issues including rangefinder optics, binding diaphragm on a Summitar and replacement of shutter blinds. Both cameras work perfectly now and I've just had them both away for three weeks in the Kimberleys. One B&W and one colour.
I wouldn't go anywhere else now for Leica service.

Thanks for both recommendations. I have a preference for being able to physically hand the camera to the repairer but will talk to both because it is probably best to use who ever is most comfortable with the model.
