Seventy five year old film ... roll #7 ('Banff' prequel)

More mystery. The serious looking cowboy-car shot has a gentleman walking beside him in what looks to be a pith helmet with a bandaged finger.

Yep, that one is interesting. How about the deer in the shot right after the shot of the Texaco station?

I see what you mean about the shot with the steam engine Keith. I am surprised they didn't stop and try to get another. But many good shots here for sure.

I was also very intrigued by the first image and would like to hear opinions as to what her motivation for it may have been and what she was atempting to convey!

Or conversly is it just a snap of an animal behind a fence with no real meaning?

I haven't seen a Texaco station in years...
I was hoping others saw the deer too...dingo you say???
The cowboy with the gloves is a great catch...someone was watching this happening...

Keith, concerning the first shot this is my take...
In an earlier roll there were shots of buffalo taken fairly close-up...this could have been an Natural Preserve type of park where the public can drive into and witness these huge animals up close without fences...
This shot may have been as they were driving up to the main gate...
I know I would have done this just to make sure I got a shot of this animal not knowing that soon I would be surrounded by them...

On another note can you imagine what they actually saw in color...these scenes and landscapes would have been just beautiful and all they had was B&W to record them...the shot of the mountain through the front windshield gives you sort of a clue of how clean and clear the views were...

These are great threads...Thanks Keith!!!

wow! what a great set! i can see why these are your favs so far Keith, the image of the steam train and it's smoke reflection with that mountain is just amazing!!

Unfreaking real! A person would be hard pressed to do better with brand new film processed immediately. It makes me want to break open my box of 1970something 4x5 Plus-X.
U da man!

The Texaco staion is at/near Lake Louise. I bet.

Not a coyote. Definitely a doe mule deer. They''re called mule deer because thay have big, I mean real big, ears. And the way the ears are positioned definitely says deer.

Definitely a deer ... amazing ears as you say!

Yes ... that drew me in too!

If he was a little further to our right we'd see more of the pith helmet which is quite a contrast to the young cowboy's head atire ... and what's with the bandaged hand? There's almost a sort of resolute "Bloody tourists!" look on these guys faces.

And the driver in the background in the process of starting the car by the looks of it ... it's a really engaging scene!

A member of the Large Format Forum has identified several of these locations. Many thanks!

I think I can help out with the location of some of the images. I am sure Jim will chime in when he gets the chance.

Image #1 maybe the present location of the Buffalo paddock just outside the town of Banff on the north side of Hwy 1

Imae #2 Cascade Mountain on the north side of town of Banff. Located next to Lake Minnewanka.

#3 and 4 ??

#5 it's the lower falls of Johnston Canyon.

#6 and 7 probably Johnston Canyon

#8 and #9 ??

#10 Definitely at Lake Louise. You can see Mt Victoria and its glacier in the middle of the picture. The peak on the left is Mt Fairview and the Big Beehive on the right.

#11 and #12 ??

#13 Could be the old Continental Divide road that heads south west towards Yoho National Park. The far peak int he picture looks like Mount Stephen in Yoho.

#14 ?

#15 Definitely Cathedral Mountain in Yoho National Park.

I was correct about the Texaco station.

I think our mystery woman photographer was an Austrian heiress by the name of Bettina Mendl ... in fact I'm almost certain about this now.

I'll post more info about her and her travelling companion in the next thread. (India)

The last shot seems to be "Castle Mountain".

She appears to be using a yellow filter as well - sophisticated.*

yours
FPJ

Was'nt a light yellow filter standard on some better quality folders?

The waterfalls and the cave (#5,#6 &#7) will be Johnson's Canyon I think. #2 will be the old Buffalo Paddock in Banff.

I live about 15 minutes from this stuff (Canmore) I should be able to pick the rest out. I'll see what I can do.

Isn't it great that you found this stuff so far away in years and distance. This is marvelous Keith.

This is sooo cool...the story behind the story behind the photos...Thanks to all who've contributed to the history of all this...

It turns out that the other person who appears regularly in the pics is not her sister but a companion from her childhood who was her closest friend until Bettina came to live in outback Oz in 1939 ... a countess no less!

Read the book from front to back today ... fascinating!
