Seventy five year old photographs ... Roll #4

Keith, have you done the roll that has photo's made in New Zealand?
I live in NZ and I m intrigued to see if I might recognise something in the photos.

I have Carlsen and allmost all the NZ shots are taken on a farm just out of New Plymouth ... Lepperton in fact! It seems like they had a specific purpose in going there ... to visit relatives maybe and there was horse riding involved again which seems to be a common theme. I think the family was heavily involved with horses in their home land of Austria.

Wow, to cruise in the 30s when most of America was out of work and with an empty belly.

As pointed out these people weren't Americans but in fact Austrian Jews who ultimately had to escape from Austria in the late thirties for their survival.

I'm sure they lost a lot of friends and realtives in the six million who didn't make it!

Thank you very much Keith, for your labour of love in scanning and posting. What an intruiging set of photos,did this family eventually settle in Australia ? The group photo on the cruise ship, the man on the right of frame appears to be holding a folding camera, any ideas anyone ?

I'd imagine it was a voyage, rather than a cruise. In those days, a steamer was just about the only way to cross an ocean. They were obviously wealthy though ... on the top deck, probably first class, and hobnobbing with the officers. Wonderful series of shots. Congratulations and many thanks.
Another thought ... the theory that the lens may not have been fully extended in some shots is compatible with the theory it might have been an early Leica with an Elmar 50/3.5. It could even have been a late model 1, with the standard 39mm thread, or even the earlier non-standard thread. No reason to suppose they bought a new camera to take with them.
