SF 24d Flash

I was recently given a Leica SF24D flash, the one designed for the M6TTL and M7. I have an M6 Classic and do not have the manual. Camerabooks does not have it either. I realize this flash is very similar to the SF20, but does it provide any additional benefits to the owner of a classic. I generally do not use flash, but couldn't argue with price. Would anyone have a PDF manual or know where I might obtain one? Thanks in advance!

It has more choices of aperture in Auto mode than the SF20, which only has three: f/2.8, f/5.6 and f/11.

From Leica web description of the SF24D "In automatic mode, six automatic flash apertures 2.0/2.8/4.0/5.6/8/11 are available."

I'm afraid I'd have to suggest calling Leica USA in NJ too. I only have the SF20 myself, and I'm not sure how different the controls are. Have you figured out how to set the film speed manually? After that Auto is the way to go, f/5.6 and 400 ISO color negative film rated at 100 works well for me.

SF24D and SF20 are almost the same. Except SF24 has a guide number 24, fairly obvious.
SF20 also support F2.0 and F1.4 too in auto mode.
The manual is not online nor available for download on Leica website.
The manual has 90 pages . . .
If I ever have the time, I might scan it someday.


In brief, here's much simplified version,
If you are using a classic, non-TTL rf,
flick mode switch to auto,
press aperture button, input your selected aperture,
LCD display will show the maxium range for the subject.
Frame and take your picture,
if light is sufficient, red lamp below power switch will turn on.
To manually overrider flash power output, press the EV button and alter EV value accordingly.
In auto mode, flash power is varied according to the ambient light condition, so don't block the small light sensor in front of the flash.

If you use the manual mode on the flash,
flash will always fire at full power.
Unless you change output by using the EV button.
So, auto mode is always the way to go.


TTL mode doesn't need much explaining.
Camera control bla bla bla.
Same logic behind every other TTL flash camera.

I don't think you need a manual.
All these should suffice.

don't go bathing, or swiming with you Leica or flash.
Might experience bad electric shock.

In fact SF20 and SF24D have the same guide number - 20. The 24 is referring to the GN when the 85mm "diffuser" is mounted. Other than that, the 24D has more aperture settings in A mode, and it supports TTL/GNC mode for D2 and CM.
