Anyone shooting Shanghai GP3(100) in 120 format?
Please share some of your snaps!
Any preferred soup to cook it in? Times?
Just looking for cheap B&W film for daily snapping, would you reccomend this film?

It is a nice film if you don't come across any issues with it. Also, its price has started going up making it not a really cheap alternative to other branded B&W film. Quality is a bit of a gamble with that film and hence I avoid it (even with the newest batches).

@2.60$ USD per roll, its still much cheaper than even Holga branded Foma.
@3.09$ USD per roll, Arista EDU is the next cheapest.
Mostly interested in comments specifically relating to GP3, Thanks!

can be nice.
i no longer use it because of unreliable quality.
but you have similar reports already, so ...
(by the way, googling for it would not be a bad idea either)

But google is not Rangefinderforum!
One must assume, ive already done that.
How bad is the QC issue here? Whole batches of crap, or just a bum roll or two a case?
Put it in context for me,
Im not looking for a film to make fine art prints for some gallery. Just snapping family and friends.
So if some odd apparitions appear on a few frames, no big deal, as long as Im getting an image for my $.
Or am i a loon?
Can anyone actually elaborate on what sort of issues you have had or are having with GP3 Quality?
Thanks again!

Usually bad things happen at the frame you might like more. And that cancels the benefit of the low price of that film. Other than its defects it is a pretty film. It offers wide tonality and you can get a good image even if your exposure is two stops off.
It gets developed fine in Rodinal and D-76. I have not tried it with any other developer.
Rodinal 1+50 for 10.5 mins at 20 degC gives good results.
D-76 1+3 for 20 mins at 20 degC (beautiful tones, minimal grain (not that it really matters at that size)). 24 mins that is reported at DigitalTruth will give you an almost bulletproof negative.
I had traces of the prints on the backing paper on some of my negatives and something like reticulation (but not reticulation) on others that I cannot get completely rid of. The bad thing about these is that you cannot do anything about it even with heavy post processing.

Use shorter fixing times than usual.
This is great film for snapping, although I prefer 135 film in bulks for it, but have dozen of GP3 in 120, and pack of 4x5 for tests and learning.
Not so good for something more valuable.

Shot quite a bit of this stuff in 120 a while back while experimenting with different developers. Rodinal stand developing worked very well with this film

In China this film is called "dog fart 3". When I travel to China in 2012 I bought about 50 rolls, I think less than 2 dollars about $1.6, not bad for snap and shoot or test your new camera. The back paper is the original thick one so fit many classic camera very well such as Super Zeiss et al.

Ignore the Shangai... it's not worth the potential trouble with quality.
The latest batches of re-branded Foma at freestyle are excellent. If you are looking for a low cost film look not further. (arista edu line 100,200,400)
From my first test roll of 400 (rate it at 250).
Rodinal for this one. Tmax dev makes it very clean looking with less grain.

Both above: Pyrocat HD 1:1:100 15mins Semi Stand 80mmHC Hasselblad H1

Harvey's 777 (Bluegrass) 12mins 71F reduced agitation Camera as above.
Nice traditional film, Buts: has a really grim reciprocity failure, think FP4 then +++, has an edge marking that can intrude on the frame but not many on the roll!!, camera specific of course, the tape holding the backing paper does not inspire quality confidence.
A fresh batch is fine. I bought some HP5+ that was OOD and the backing paper had absolutely ruined the film (it was 2001) I have added a small image so if you have never seen the effect this how bad it can look!!

Below HP5+ OOD 2001

My biggest problem with this film was that the frame numbers printed on the backing paper were too faint to be read through the red window on the camera back. Also, on some rolls, the film was not taped on to the proper position on the backing paper resulting in missed frames.
Since I spend considerably more on paper than I do on film, I have concluded that the price difference between Tri-X and less expensive films is not such an issue.

Andy, are you speaking of their Arista films and chemistry?
I snagged a sweet deal on 2 bottles of their Premium Developer to try on some expired Tmax, Tri X I have sitting in the fridge.
Splurged and bought Kodak Indicator stop bath.
I guess im just waiting for fair weather, and the postman
