Shantou Era film dealer

Well, there was a reason I didn't read that slag it out thread. So, I missed Bill's leaving. That sucks. But I too am more and more retreating from RFF. It seems it's time to move on.

BTW, I never tried Shantou but I'm using Lucky SHD400 film. It's looking good. I just shouldn't scan it but get prints to see how the results really look. Too bad I can't find a B&W printing lab near here.

most of the time i disagree with bill, still that's a shame for someone to be banned. and the truth is that those endless complainers are still around...

time to pack up myself...

I'm not sure that Bill Mattock was banned. From what I read he chose to move on for reasons mentioned in the link posted in #9 of this thread.

Others have and are moving on. For various reasons.

There's just *too* much niceness in this forum - to the point of it being suffocating. I used to frequent the Xterra Owners forum and the mods there would dish out a funny diss once in a while and the members would do the same to each other. Once a diss has dished out, people just laughed and moved on. You won't find members there taking those personally and starting another thread analyzing the diss and what it meant for the forum community... much less bitchin to the admins. tsk tsk tsk

Era Film

Era Film

Its really amazing that people now are really seeking Era film. It used to be the film I used mainly years ago, when it was still available here in Manila.

Era was also a very cheap film. Being cheap myself, I used it almost exclusively. 😀
The snobs who shot with Kodak or Agfa often looked down on Era for being cheap. It cost about 4 times cheaper than an equivalent factory packed Kodak Tmax 100 film. People had the notion that its being cheap meant that the film was inferior. Kodak and Agfa were ahead in terms of resolution or grain, but the comparison was not quite fair. Era had an emulsion which had more in common with the Kodak, Agfa, or even Fuji emulsions from the 1950s.

Perhaps this demand is due to the dwindling stocks of the more orthodox brands? Or does it have something to do with a renewed interest in nostalgic-flavoured imaging as a reaction to the antiseptically clinical look of digital? 😀

Here is one photo from my Era days, dating from about 1994 or 1995: (yes, it was shot with a rangefinder- a Canon IIb with an Industar-61 lens! 🙂)

I like this photo! I prefer Era over Lucky though, Era has a better texture, Lucky seems to be a bit flatter than Era.

I wasn't happy with Lucky SHD, the missing anti halation layer does not go well with what I shoot. This Era film does look more too my liking. I have look if I can find it somewhere in germany.

I have used 15 rolls of ERA so far and I'm very happy with it. ERA film is also very forgiving of my sometimes distracted style of developing film. I have experienced different combinations of screwing up the correct times and other mishaps in developing and still got good results. Try it out. JimG

That's funny you mention that, Socke. The missing anti halation layer is actually what drove me to try out the Lucky SHD film. 🙂

I too am sorry to see that Bill has pulled away,I didn't always agree with all he expressed, and often felt that he was trying to reign his comments back in some ways.At the same time his views were always interesting.I hope he reconsiders.

PS.I'm sure that Era is a grand film.Good luck with it.

I’d reiterate Fedbob’s note that it doesn’t appear Bill was ‘tossed’ out. He seems to have decided to depart on his own. Bill has done this one previous time. He eventually came back. This time I’m not certain.

I’ll be in touch with him since I purchased a lotta film from him and want to get some indication of what happens with various developers.
