For sharper scanning results with Epson perfection 4870 photo:

- load film in holder as indicated.
- put on each corner and in the middle a paper strip (thikness index card) between glass and filmholder.
You will be suprised.
Tested with Silverfast and MF holder.

that will vary with each individual model and scanner... but I'm not suprised. Doug's film holders now makes variable focal height holders for the epson flatbeds.

This works with YOUR Epson but will vary unfortunately from unit to unit. Not that it is not worth trying, it certainly is. My Epson 4990, for example is better without a holder and the film laid right on the glass (Newton rings issues sometimes now though). I tried using varying heights of post-it notes and found that none was best, then tried no holder at all to allow the film to be even closer to the glass and lo and behold that was even better!

But what you report is exactly why this guy:

http://www.betterscanning.com/

sells adjustable film holders for Epson scanners. I was going to get one but after my test realize it would not have helped in my unit's case.

Before buying one of the betterscanning film holders for my Epson 4990 I tested my scanner to see what height gives me the most sharpness. Standard height works best for my scanner so I didn't buy one of the variable height holders and went with the fixed height ones.
