I recently stumbled upon her pictures from the 60s which she took in the Greater Manchester area. Gritty, intimate and impressive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gl9331eCUA A short biography here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Baker

I saw an exhibition of her work printed large. Excellent, gritty photojournalism. For part of her work she used a ‘baby’ Rolleiflex (127?).

Ah, yes, Mrs Shirley Baker, i came a cross one of her books in the local library a few years ago. Excellent photographer, amazing pictures of an era long gone.

Reminds me a bit of Helen Levitt. Grittier than Robert Frank, but capturing the same joy in life that Cartier-Bresson often did. Children can make a game of anything, play anywhere. Hopeful and sobering at the same time. Thanks for the link -- I had never heard of her until today.

My M5s need red dots!
Wow... now, certain things make sense. The British TV show "Call the Midwife" uses these images in their opening credits sequence. Interestingly enough, they tout themselves as a "woman's show" because it's written, produced and directed by women.

I remember that Manchester from the fifties and sixties .
Still plenty of bomb sites from the forties .
They started clearing it all away about the mid sixties and relocating inner city families to new suburbs out on the edge of town and increasing the size of the villages to the south of the city.
Looking at it now you`d never guess where the villages began and the city ended .
It`s now just one sprawl but when I visit I still see it through the eyes of a ten year old child and can remember the fields and farms of my childhood .
