just came back from the local camera store...bought a monopod, a cheapie manfrotto but it will do what i want.

whilst browsing the store i found a think tank retro 10 bag...never have seen one in the flesh...and now i want that bag. it's seems a perfect mix of the domke 5xc (which is too big/bulky) and the retro 5 (which is a tad too small and which i have).

i fully admit to being in need of some not so retail therapy.

i could use the too small for the rd1 retro 5 for the x100 and the retro 10 for the rd1 kit...and then i would just have to ignore the other 10 or so bags that i also have...

really bad thing is it's not worth selling my other bags as shipping costs usually means i lose money...i don't mind not making money on a sale but losing $$ is just not right for the soul.

so i walked out of the store w/o the retro 10 but we all know that i'm going back there tomorrow...next week at the latest.

I saw the dimension specs online and it seems to actually wider and deeper than Domke 5xc. Can you tell me more about how it does not feel as bulky as the Domke? Thanks.

i didn't measure but the 5xc seems bigger for top to bottom.

Ok, here is what I like and dislike from the Domke 5xc:
1. Like: being able to separate top and bottom compartments so that I can access bottom one independently for small accessories
2. Like: not too heavy by itself
3. Dislike: not wide enough (front to back)

Did you find the Think Tank to be too heavy? 3lbs seem a bit heavy.
Also I wonder how to organize small RF / m4/3 lenses inside?

Seriously, not looking for the perfect bag means you have perfect lumbars and only one kit.

I tend to have bags around to separate out equipment. But I have one or two small bags I use for what I want to use that day. I don't like to carry a lot of equipment just one main camera plus 1 or 2 lenses and a small p&s for emergency usage.

Currently I am using a Timbuk2 mini messenger designed for the iPad which I added a couple of inserts to hold a small rangefinder and another lens. The small p&s ends up attached to the messenger sling via one of their accessary pouches. Works well for me.

Back Alley, I know how u feel... Until u find the perfect setup, u are not going to be happy. Go buy it 🙂.

I don't get all these bag threads where people wring their hands over buying what they think is the "perfect" bag, then a couple of weeks later, there's another thread about how it wasn't "perfect" after all, so they start looking for something else.

Here's a thought, why not just use what you've got and make do if it's close to what you need, and accept it's limitations and that there is no "perfect" bag for your particular requirements. Then you can put the money you save on the endless bag quest towards something else that's going to be far more useful (I'm sure we can all think of some charities that could use some funds for starters).

And am I the only one who sees the irony of the title and timing of this thread given Keith's thread in the Philosophy section 😉

Show us what all you put into the Retro 10.

I looked at that bag, and overall liked it. But gosh, it seemed just a bit bulky and heavy. I really like the Think Tank quality. I have the Sling-o-Matic 10, which works out pretty well when traveling, but would like something a bit smaller at times.

I have the original BBB, which I rather like, but the total lack of structure means things are rather haphazard in there and so can be a bit tedious. The Retro 5 was clearly too small. I might try the new BBBR.
