I was taking night shots in Morro Bay, CA a couple of years ago when a policeman came up to check on us. Nice and polite, no problems. This was post 9/11 and the small town of Morro Bay is also home to Power Generating Station.
Unfortunately, I've also had dealings with policeman and security guards, who tend to think that you're lying or something to hide first. Likely, if the person's job involves telling vagrants to "move along", or "anyone out here at night is up to no good", then that will be the first reaction you'll get. As far as they are concerned, anyone out there is someone that they have to check, and they don't like exceptions.
