I agreed to shoot some pictures for a friend as a Mother's Day gift from him to his wife. It's the first time I've attempted a photo "assignment." Despite the laid back circumstances - no pay, no unrealistic expectations, no personalities to manage - I was stressed as hell, particularly before the shoot (what camera to use?) and after (did I get a single decent shot?). Anxiety is my creative process, but I really sweated this shoot. I was petrified I was going to ruin Mother's Day.

I learned:
-Kids move a lot.
-Kids don't do what you ask them to do.
-It would be a nightmare to shoot a wedding.
-It must be nice having a good DSLR.

I wanted to use my M6 and Nokton 1.2, but it wasn't accessible on the shoot day so I went with a Mamiya 645 Pro + 150mm, Pentax 6x7 + 105mm and, as a sort of insurance since it was otherwise entirely a natural light shoot, a Contax T3 + flash.

Because it was a documentary shoot, I was concerned the 150mm's harrowingly narrow depth of field and the hand-held 1/30th on the 6x7 would swamp me, but...

The 'Client' is happy with the results and will be printing several at 5x7 and one at 11x14.

I'm relieved it all worked out.

i feel the same way as you whenever i do a job, but as you long as you communicate clearly what your experience and style are, you're covered. even if you have no formal portfolio, you should at least show them a few examples of the type of shots you like to take so that they know what to expect. also, let them know that this is your first real "assignment". if they agree, then they have no logical reason to be dissapointed with the results and you can walk away knowing that you did your best.

GREAT STUFF !!!
I like the what you did...
I'd be very happy with those results...Good job...

I hate weddings too...

Hobby=Work

It's been my experience that a deadline and somebodies expectations of your turning in first class photos (expecially if thy're paying you) can turn a very enjoyable hobby into....work.

Wow, thank you guys for all the supportive comments - the encouraging words really help. And, Kully, not just any old 6x7...A 6x7 with terrible frame spacing problems!

Your head may think this was hard, but your results are terrific. Somebody's mom and wife will be very pleased on Sunday. Nice work!
