I'll be in Maui, Hawaii this weekend and was wondering if there are any local photographers who would like to get together to shoot.

I've been there several times before and always seem to stay near my hotel in Kihei, but I'd love to get further out. Street shooting is pretty thin there...I wouldn't mind taking a rain forest hike, or seeing the south shore...hell, pretty much anywhere. It'd just be nice to have a shooting partner.

David.

My wife and I went to Maui the last July and the thing that struck me was how slow it was to get anywhere. 25mph speed limit in most places. Felt I could almost walk faster than that. Gorgeous though, and Plantation Course sticks out as best I have ever played. Have fun there David.

Sorrt, not planning any trips there any time soon :( but enjoy!

Depending on what kind of photography you are interested, here are a couple of suggestions:

1) Haleakalā (the big mountain in the middle of the island :) ), and the drive up there
2) Kahekili Hwy (road from Kahului to Kapalua or so - north-west coast)
3) Road to Hana
4) Banyan Tree in Lahaina
5) If you have a water-proof camera, go snorkeling (a.m. hours) at Black Rock or around La Perouse Bay.

Enjoy !

Thanks guys for all the insight. I actually travel to Maui fairly often. I shot Haleakala (which is the 10,000 foot volcano island-center) with an X100. I've photographed fairly extensively in Kihei with X-Pro 1, Leica M9, and Ricoh GR.

I was just looking for some new ideas and company this trip :)

Great time of year for it David.
There are a lot of cool places to shoot as you know.
I'd go back to Haleakala in a sec.
The Big Beach at Makena in the evening offers nice shots of locals boogie boarding
The bamboo forest about a mile or so after twin falls on the road to Hana is great
My favorite little shop is "Local Boys Shave Ice" in Lahaina opposite Kamehameha School
Paia is picturesque, as is the Makawao area

Enjoy - wish I was going...

Aloha David....my name is Siddho and I am living on the east side of Maui...past Hana ,next to the Haleakala National Park....you can't beat this area for landscapes and nature stuff...right now I am traveling in India ,so not there to go out with you.but check it out and if you are interested you can ask me more questions.

Haleakala is fantastic, best is to go for the sunset. You have a better notion on how clear the weather is and you won't need to wake up ridiculously early - thought if you do because of the timezone, take a shot at it, you will then get plenty of daylight time to explore photo opportunities.

Regarding the road to Hana, personally, I much prefer the road AFTER Hana. You pass Hana and then go all the way throught the southeastern side of the island on the slope of Haleakala. There is seven pools, which is gorgeous, a red beach which is just... WOW. and it's just plain gorgeous. Car rental companies won't draw the road after Hana on their maps because it's partially a dirt road and has dips on creeks that are dry in winter but only 4x4 trespassable on summer, and you will be at your own risk. We've done it with a Ford Mondeo on January, so it's fine. It's worth it, one of the best things to do in Maui. I've been to Hawai'i many times but this is just gold. Check it out:

then you have seven pools, which in winter are not in their full glory, but it's still pretty nice:

and the overall view of the way back through the southeast of the island:

there is this small shop which is VERY photogenic but I totally missed the opportunity. next time I won't.

Also shot the Haleakala summit with an X100, did a fantastic job up there and in the whole trip, really. :)

Have you seen Jaws already? You gotta take a muddy dirt road which is fine, or just park outside and walk, it's impressive but unless you are into surf and have a 300mm+ lens you won't get many cool pics of the waves. But the path itself is pretty rad, locals use the high grass field to ditch stolen cars and general goods. Flipped burned cars, random stuff and a pig carcass said hello when I went there.

Using a 50mm lens on an R-D1 (75mm field of view):

in Paia, grab a bite at Paia Fish Market, awesome fish sandwiches! Sansei is great for sushi and general pacific rim goodies. Damn, I miss Li Hing Mui covered stuff. Have a kick ass trip :)

ps: most of my flickr photos are geotagged for travel tip giving purposes, hope it helps!
