I admit to being one of those who said "Woe is me". I shot a lot of stock for many years, sold through Photonica and ageFotostock/Pixtal. When Royalty free started to take over my sales fell a bunch, but I kept shooting what I shot as royalty free(mostly scenics, not a good royalty free market). I tried to branch out and do more still life stuff, but the market was slim for this stuff at the time. When Getty bought Photonica they wouldn't look at film anymore, but my investment in MF Ai & AiS Nikon lenses was incompatable with any of the then available digital bodies. When age went all digital submissions I said enough. Couldn't justify spending enough money to keep up when sales were shrinking so fast. Sold off all the Nikon glass and got my first M7. Thankfully I fell into a great teaching gig as this was happening. Never looked back. I still sell a little bit every month, but it keeps shrinking. My contract with Getty has another two and a half years or so, and with age another two. It was fun while it lasted, but I sure don't miss having to be out chasing the leaves every fall or the flowers every spring.
