Short story. Starring R-D1.

I set my D700 so that it won't shoot if there's no card in the slot.

But I have no way to know whether I have film in any of my M bodies... other than turning the rewind crank and finding it stiff or loose.

And nobody thinks about checking in the heat of the moment.

I've done the lens cap thing... but my meter tells me right away if that is happening on the M8. Even if I do leave it on for a photo, once I chimp, I discover it right away.

Tuesday, while getting off the plane at London City Airport for the ATEI/ICE convention at Earls Court, I suddenly realised with horror I hadn't checked if I had a card in my R-D1 before sticking it in my luggage. (I wasn't bringing any extra cards or batteries)
Luckily a swift check over breakfast/coffee showed I had subconsciously loaded a card in the camera. Pfew! ;)

It's one thing I like about my Bessa cameras. There's a little window that shows if there's a film cartridge inside or not - you can even see what film it is!
