At present I own a M2 and 2 M3's and for the last year or so have been thinking about trading one of my M3s for a digital M.. Most likely a M9.
However, there is so much negative "press" regarding the M9 on RFF I am having second thoughts.. trading in my Nikon D90 / F5 for a Nikon D700 seems a better bet.
Does anyone actually own a digital M that has not gone back to Leica for repair?

I don't think Ken Rockwell's has been back, and he must hammer his. A friend has an M9 too and his is OK.

Those are two VERY different bodies...
Get the M9 with a warranty. Live life, don't worry. (If your intended usage is professional, disregard the above).

I have a M8 that I bought used. No problems so far. I'm enjoying the camera.

I don't have an M9 but, am very confident with my M8 as far as reliability. That said when I do an event for pay or promotional. A 5Dii comes along. It's my opinion that the Digital M's are very capable image makers. I do also believe that the latest DSLR cameras are more flexible professional tools. So how will yo use your M9 supposing you get one?

Mine is okay, since I have it, works perfect. But that does not mean, that you will not have any problems, because you won't buy mine... ;-)
But you should consider, that most times the people with problems write in forums like this one, whereas the people, that simply use their camera and have no problem, will not complain about having no problems with their gear... They will be quietly enjoy taking photos.

To the OP, not that I am trying to be rude. If I read every car forum online I could come to a conclusion that every Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, etc. is a piece of junk because of posters who happen to have a repair issue.
But, what kind of question is this? Are you expecting someone to say NO?...or that Leica has 100% or even 90% or 80% returns on their cameras? Surely you are not... you will only invigorate the Leica bashers with this thread.
You can actually contact Leica and find out what the percentage of returns actually is...
We have good people on this forum but you should research a bit more individually, as I have and come to your own conclusion.:angel: Otherwise, the results you obtain from this kind of posting will be severely skewed and not worth a tinker's.

You always hear about the one plane that crashes, not the thousands that land safely every day. If the M9 fits the bill for you financially and operationally, go for it.

If you enjoy using your M's and you have the money to buy an M9 then there is no question. Buy it! I know I would if I were in your shoes.

I was sceptical about the M9 for a long time, and only bought a used one this July. I wish I had done so earlier. I have no complaints at all. It is the one digital camera to have, produced outstanding results. Compliments rather than replaces my film Ms, and produces images that rival those I make with medium format gear, but is more convenient.

I changed from a D700 to an M8 and a D90.
No problems with the M8. Surprisingly I prefer the D90 to the D700. M6 still remains my favourite.

The word "Leica" has always been a toxic flypaper of sorts. The "negative press" about anything is very persistent.
I would trust those with first-hand knowledge more than those who simply have an opinion.

M8 works great. I agree with what was said above, the internet will ALWAYS draw out the negative reviews. If you had a bad experience, you naturally want to tell the world. The same cannot be said about those who have a great experience (or even good experience). I dont necessarily feel compelled to start a thread saying how much i love my m8/m9 or any other product.

I've got two M9 bodies, and excepting some peeling up of the vulcanite on one I have had zero trouble with either of them, and I shoot a lot. I even spent a week away with only a single M9 and the 35/1.4 pre-ASPH- I trusted it to work flawlessly that much. I had a second hand M8 that had the green line issue which Leica repaired free of charge. I also had an M8.2 which was perfectly fine. After I sold it it developed a screen issue- which was repaired by Leica free of charge for the guy I sold it to, the third owner.
I don't hesitate to recommend a Digital M.

Mine was never in for a repair so never got back from a repair
Its a M8.2 (I never buy the first model, so I bought the RD1-s, not the RD1 and the M8.2 and not the M8, were I hope to reduce the risk of child diseases)
Rest assured, child deseases of the M9 won't be cured with the M10, getting a completely different type of sensor and software and other new stuff the risk is very high it will suffer of new child deseases!
