should I start buying an F6/F5 an FM-3 and all F's i can get back?

Modern cameras really do have more in common with computers than classic cameras, and because of that - we have this culture of "churn".

-True, but I'd be inclined to believe digital cameras, too, is a maturing market.

Earlier on, there were significant, quantifiable improvements going from one camera generation to the next - larger capture device, better low-light/high-ISO capability, more megapixels...

Improvements now are more incremental, hence reducing the (rational) need to constantly upgrade. Also, the people who had film cameras have now replaced them with digital ones, further reducing demand for new cameras.

I expect the average DSLR to have a longer usable life now than, say, 5-6 years ago; we've arrived at a point where continued improvements provide diminishing returns for the majority of users, in turn reducing the incitement to upgrade.
