Last weekend I reached out fot my CLE set. I hardly use it anymore. So the question is keep it or leave it for a new Nikon lens. Two parts of the set needs attention, the white spots on the 28mm and the 40mm needs some adjustment. The front part is a little loose. The set is in very good condition as you can see from pictures. I placed a trade ad but I am still doubting whether to go along.....no offers yet, so no harm done. Can you help me out?

If you don't use it, sell it to pay for something you will use. It's not a camera that's likely to appreciate greatly in value, and sitting on the shelf it serves no real purpose.

By Nikon I assume DSLR? The question is then, do see yourself shooting film? because if you do, you cant really do much better than the CLE (in my opinion).
But if you dont, I dont see any point keeping it.

Yes it is a Nikon DSLR

Yes it is a Nikon DSLR

Yes I own a digital Nikon, I hardly use film, thats why I am in doubt, the CLE is a beatifull camera and as a former employee of Minolta Camera Benelux it has some emotional value to me.
What is the value?

With all three lenses? Hmmmm you could probably get maybe $1.5k on ebay for the lot. Less in the classifieds here.

My guiding concept is that gear that isn't used at all for a year or more should be sold, not necessarily to buy other gear but just because it's unused. Whatever you used the CLE to do, it looks like that purpose is being met with your other camera(s). So, unless you like to collect, what purpose does the CLE serve?

Practical value versus sentiment value, sometimes a hard decision. Why not keep it on the shelf for a determined period, say one year, and then see how you feel?

While a year or so is sometimes a good idea to use in selling something, it is not always the case. My passions for classic cars and photography waxes and wanes with life. It is up to you if you want to use it or not.

However, with that said, the unfortunate state of the world now is an ever-increasing use of digital throwaways and ME, NOW. I would encourage you to embrace and use film now more than ever because the pending scarcity of film will mean something else that you will not have the opportunity to experience without great difficulty. Then, when you decide if you really like film or not, then you have done all you can do, right?

Keep it. It's a great kit worthy of a little TLC, and USE!

You are right, no purpose, but since I browse on this forum i more and more like what you are making, esspecially the black and white pictures. Do you scan these yourselves or does the lab do that for you?

From my standpoint, I have held onto my cle's throughout all my other system purchases and sales. One time I sold my cle system and found myself absolutely nuts to find another...all pre-internet, of course. Now I have two sets of cle kit and while other stuff comes and goes, usually in dramatic fashion, the cle simply waits for me to return to my roots...and I always have. Not sure why, other than the set-up simply works for me. I wish you the best in your decision, and if it were me I'd hold it.

Thanks for the compliment. Like a lot of RFFers I use both film and digital RFs. I send my film to North Coast for development and scanning since I shoot a relatively small volume. I am not a competent scan tech. Most of the B&W shots in my gallery are M8 conversions, using Capture One, JFI profiles, and Photoshop.

Geertl, my question is: which Nikon lens are you looking for? Does that lens really matter to you? In case your answer is "yes, it matters", go for it. And sell your CLE that looks, by the way, in very good shape. There still are people who would certainly crave to inherit your film camera, and their satisfaction would add to yours... Spyro is right, I can see no reason to keep it on the shelf.

Considering its history and yours, I suspect you might have a serious dose of remorse if you sell it. There are some things in life that has value to an individual that far exceeds the going price. I think if you have to ask the question, the answer is do not sell. You are looking for reinforcement of a decision and that means you are in doubt so the obvious answer is to hold.

Depreciation on digital stuff is steep so hold and wait unless you have a need for the lens.

My main system camera, a Bronica ETRS that is used probably the most and is almost a complete system I'd have no 2nd thoughts of selling but, selling either my CL or Rolleiflex would be a tough decision so each time the thought has arisen and the doubt formed, I simply forget it. I suspect when I finally get rid of all my camera gear the CL and Rolleiflex will be the only 2 remaining and I'll use them until I go to the great image in the sky.

So I went

So I went

My CLE has a new owner from HongKong
I wish him many good pictures with it.

case closed, thanks for all the replies, if I ever regret, I will be back on this forum

Oh, you can still hang out on this forum, anyway. Surely you have plenty of RF experience to share from your CLE days, and then there are the nooks and crannies of the site where people do talk about general photo issues and even DSLRs, among a host of non-RF cameras.

Enjoy!

Sure I will stay

Sure I will stay

I will stay on this forum, as I can learn and enjoy good pictures and I still love the rangefinder idea. Thinking about a Nex or so

Hey there. If you still want to sell your kit, I may be your man. :D
